Make Your Own Hanging Cup Cookies
I recently went shopping with my friend Johnna aka The Polka-Dot Zebra and we found some hanging cup cookie cutters. They were really cute but very basic. When I got home, I remembered some cookies that Johnna made last fall. She showed us we could make our own hanging cup cookies with almost any cookie cutter we have.
Let me just say, when 2 cookie decorators get together and and go shopping they will find every cookie cutter in town! Not only that, you will get some amazing ideas and inspiration from each other. Here are the cookies Johnna made for coworkers last fall and I fell in love with the idea. She took a regular cookie cutter and added a notch so it would hang on the side of the cup. She is a genius!
While we were at World Market we found these cutters:
I grabbed this star and flower and put them in my basket. I loved Johnna’s leaves and she told me to use the notch as a template for any cutter we have. So, I did. Now I want to share with you.
Supplies for hanging cup cookies:
Favorite Cookie Cutters
Knife
Cold Cookie Dough
Now before we go any farther, I noticed different cutters need to have different sized notches. You just need to remember a few things, smaller cutters need smaller notches, bigger cutters need bigger notches. Also, your cookies might expand some when they bake which means your notch will spread. If you keep that in mind you will be able to make any shape cup hanger you want!
Once you roll out your dough, cut the shapes you want and place it in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Anytime you hand cut dough it needs to be really cold! If it is not cold enough you will tear the dough instead of cutting it and it will have an ugly edge. Also, a sharp knife will make a smooth cut.
When your 10 minutes of patiently waiting for the dough to chill are up, remove the dough and decide where to cut the notches. You may want to make a template to use so all the notches are the same.
I pulled out a bunch of random cutters to show you this will work on most of the cutters you have. I love this idea and plan on using it in the near future!

Lisa, I’m thinking a baby bottle, pacifer, or two baby booties (with the notch between) for Miss Anne. All things she needs to get used to seeing a lot of!! 🙂 — Diapers would be the most used baby item, but not so appetizing on a glass of milk lol
Take your letter “I” cookie cutter and cut the notch. Goes quick and is square.

The letter “I” would work but you still need to cut an angle at the top. If the top of the notch is straight the cookie will fall forward. The angle at the top will make it sit nicely on the cup!
