Shark Week-Look out Seals!
When I saw the commercial for Shark Week the other day on the Discovery Channel, I laughed out loud. I was horrified for a second but, when I realized it wasn’t real, the laughter began. Then, an idea hit me and Shark Week cookies were in the oven before I could say, “Poor Snuffy the seal.”
What do you think? I am still laughing! Poor little Snuffy. Now don’t get me wrong, I am crazy about seals and don’t want them to be eaten by sharks but, that commercial hit my funny bone.
Here is the Shark Week commercial if you want to see it. It is titled, “Story of Snuffy the seal.” Please don’t let your kiddos see it before you approve it though. It might upset them and I don’t want to be responsible for crying children.
SHARK WEEK AUGUST 4, 2013 on the DISCOVERY CHANNEL
When my son Tylor was little, we would watch Shark Week together. He was fascinated by most animal shows but, Shark Week has always been his favorite. If I missed a show because I was making dinner, he would come to the kitchen and tell me about it almost word for word. He was so focused. I guess those memories is what makes this week special for me.
Unlike Tylor and his shark stores, I have trouble focusing. When I began making cookies, one of the hardest things for me was to stay focused on the theme. I would become excited and before I knew what I was doing, I would make a dozen different designs when I only needed a few. Needless to say, most of my decorating time was spent mixing icing colors and washing dishes. By the time I started decorating I was tired and didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have.
(Salt and pepper cookies are inspired by my friend Sweet Sugar Belle. Thanks Callye!)
Now when I plan my platters and designs, I try to stay as focused as a shark chasing it’s dinner. If it doesn’t catch something, it doesn’t eat. The though of not eating would definitely make me stay focused.
Maybe I should stay as focused as a seal planning it’s escape. Now that would take some focus!
Anyway, my point is don’t make the same mistake I did. Simplify your designs so you will have fun decorating instead of spending your time mixing colors and washing dishes. You might just have some time to watch Shark Week!
Bear hugs,
These are just terrific! Great, great job!
Thanks M!!
Lisa, you are just so talented.
Awe, thank you Kaholly!!
Lisa, I love you so much! My mom told me about that commercial WITHOUT telling me that it was fake. She’s laughing while she’s telling me and I’m thinking, “That’s so horrible, how could you laugh about that!?” Of course, I eventually learned it wasn’t real, and that Mom probably should have led with that information 😉
And these cookies are killing me! I adore each one, but would it be totally weird to say that that salt and pepper cookie is divine? I guess I’m a sucker for texture! 🙂
I don’t think your mom should have done that to you in your condition! LOL
I love textured cookies also. I am looking forward to fall and winter textured cookies;)
These are ADORABLE! The look on that shark’s face is priceless…had me cracking up laughing! Great job, as always~
Thanks Terri! I am glad I made you laugh today!
Did you hand cut these or perform you piecing magic with cutters? They look so great!
The seal is a smooched candy corn cutter with a few additions and the shark is hand cut.
These are so much fun! Love them!
Thanks TriciaZ!
Hahahahaha!! I haven’t seen the commercial yet (will go check it out soon) but those cookies are hilarious. And beautiful. And creative. And perfect.
You HAVE to see the commercial! It is so funny!!
Cutest Sharks and I love your salt and pepper shakers, they are spot on.
Thanks Hani! Sweet Sugar Belle helped with those;)
Lisa, your Shark Week cookies are adorable and hilarious! I just adore them and you did a fantastic job with the decorating. (Take it from me, I once did this for a living and designed sets of copper cookie cutters.) I’m so glad I found your site after hopping over from Jennifer’s Shark Week post. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Stacy! What cookie cutters did you design? I would love to see them!
Your shark cookies are cuter then the commercial and that’s pretty darn cute – ‘Snuff said! 🙂
Hahaha! You are so cute KIM!!
I know nothing of shark week, but your cookies are super cute with their forks and knives, salt and pepper! Way cute!
Thanks Michelle!!
Love these! The shark wearing his bib getting ready to chow down is my favorite. His expression definitely reads hunger and excitement.
Thanks Aida. I had fun making these!
I first saw that commercial (half watching and half on the computer), and it took me a second or two to realize it wasn’t real:) Your cookies are also UNREAL! Such an adorable idea…who knew that a shark eating a seal could inspire such cuteness!?!
BTW, unlike me, my husband does not watch shark week since he loves to surf. In fact, two surfers were killed within two years (most recently Oct. 2012) at nearby Surf Beach, where my husband has surfed, but now has abandoned that spot:) Let’s face it, sharks live in the ocean!
I don’t know why that commercial makes me laugh so much Sue but, it does. I had to make the cookies! LOL
I am so sorry to hear about the surfers! That is awful! I walk and hike in the mountains here and pray I don’t walk up on a bear. I will take walking in the woods over surfing with sharks any day.
I don’t mean to sound nonchalant about the surfers; it really is tragic. We hike a lot too:) Around here it’s mountain lions I worry about, especially when there is a warning posted…gulp.
I knew you weren’t being nonchalant. I know you care. It is scary when we enter into places animals hunt and eat. We are taking a risk. I do it every time I hit a hiking trail or walk down my driveway. Surfers do it every time they enter the ocean. I am not going to stop hiking because of it though and I don’t think the surfers will stop surfing.
I will however hide under my bed if I see a post warning about a mountain lion! YIKES! Those really scare me! LOL
Beautifil cookies as always! Love these!
Thanks Asmita! I love a funny set of cookies
Wow, Lisa! These cookies are hilarious and incredible! I feel bad about the cute seals, but I also can’t help being fascinated by seeing sharks rip them apart. 😛 That’s what Shark Week is about! Awesome commercial, too!
Thanks Mike! I love the photography of the shows. I want to lay on the little boat and take pictures of the shark as it jumps out of the water. I would LOVE to do that;)
