Christmas Thumbprint Cookies-1 Cookie Mix 3 Ways
How many cookies do you make during the holidays? Are you overwhelmed? I may have a simple solution you can make from a cookie mix. One bag of cookie mix can be made into 3 different cookies. Christmas tree, Santa hats and Rainbow Sprinkle Christmas thumbprint cookies and no one will know they were made from a cookie mix.
Aren’t they cute? It also looks like you spent hours making them and no one will ever know they are from a Betty Crocker Cookie Mix. Muahahaha, Muahahaha, Muahahaha. OK, I will stop the evil laughing for now. 😉
I don’t know why but this year I am loving Santa Hats. I made some meringue Santa Hats for Jennifer at Not Your Momma’s Cookies the other day and it inspired these. They are cute and delicious so what’s not to love.
Christmas Thumbprint Cookies with sprinkles are so colorful that everyone will love them.
Supplies for Christmas Thumbprint Cookies:
Betty Crocker Cookie Mix
Buttercream Icing Recipe in Red and Green
Sprinkles-White and Rainbow
Candy Beads or Sixlets for the Tree Topper
Snowflakes for Santa’s Hat
It all being with this cookie mix. On the back there is a recipe for roll out cookies. Follow it to make the roll out cookies but don’t roll it out as you would for cut out cookies. Follow the instructions below.
Rainbow Sprinkle Christmas Thumbprint Cookies:
- Mix the dough following the roll out cookies instructions on the back of the cookie mix.
- Roll the dough into 1/2″ balls.
- Roll the balls in the sprinkles immediately or the sprinkles won’t stick to the dough.
- Place them on a cookie sheet.
- Use a 1/2 tsp. measuring spoon to make the dent in the center of each cookie and bake as directed.
- Let the cookies cool completely.
- Mix 1 1/4 cups of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk and place into 2 bowls. Add red and green food color and fill the thumbprint cookies.
Santa Hat Christmas Thumbprint Cookies:
- Mix the dough following the roll out cookies instructions on the back of the cookie mix and add a few drops of red food coloring.
Once the cookies cool completely, use a #21 star tip to pipe a swirl on each cookie and top with a snowflake or a white candy bead.
Christmas Tree Thumbprint Cookies
Follow the steps for the Santa hast but use green food coloring for the dough and for the buttercream frosting. When the icing is wet, sprinkle with a few rainbow sprinkles and top with a yellow candy bead.
I didn’t have any green non-pareils so I rolled the tree thumbprints in green sprinkles.
See how easy your holiday cookies can be. Easy and oh so cute! Here are some Christmas Thumbprints I did for Lil Luna’s blog a while back.
Bear hugs,
Great ideas, Lisa! Anything to make the holidays easier is a plus in my book! 🙂
Love how you made them into little trees, look so cute!
love ur ideas but got a question when do u bake them? after u roll them
through the sprinkles?
rgds chantal
I bake them after they are rolled in the sprinkles.
I tried these and none of my cookies held their shapes. I am not sure what I did wrong.
Hi Brittany,
Next time roll smaller balls and don’t make the indent until they come out of the oven like I did in this post: http://lilluna.com/christmas-thumbprint-cookies/
Where do you buy the white non pareils?
Hi Juli,
I get mine at a cake decorating store, Wal-Mart, Michaels, Karen’s Cookies or even Amazon. Here is a link to some on Amazon:

Can’t wait to try this! I have 3 kids and am looking for a very simple recipe (found it) for a cookie exchange. How many cookies does this recipe make?
This is a fun project to do with the kids. I hope you all have fun making them.
The batch I made ended up making 71 cookies. 😉
