Apple Rings Recipe à La Mode with Caramel Sauce
I love spending time with my family. Everyone is so busy these days and it seems as if the only time we get together on holidays. Well, yesterday was Easter and hanging out with my kids and grandson made me nostalgic for the days when I was a little girl. I would go to grandmas house and run around playing football with my cousins (I told you I was a tomboy). We would eat wonderful food and delicious desserts like good old fashioned apple rings. Then, we would head outside to see who’s team we were going to be on for the big game. Those were the days.
As I was missing my grandma and those special childhood days, I realize the good old days don’t have to be something of the past. We can make memories with our families right now so they can cherish today as the good old days. Recipes like old fashioned apple rings one a good place to start.
Supplies for Good Old Fashioned Apple Rings:
Apples-2 apples makes about 16 rings
Pinch of Salt
1/2 cup of milk
Canola Oil for frying
Small Circle Cookie Cutter
Plate covered with a paper towel
Cooling rack placed on a baking sheet
You can use different apples to make apple rings. Granny Smith, Red Delicious, or Gala work well. I used red delicious because that is what I had on hand. Begin by whisking the eggs in a small bowl and set it aside. Combine the dry ingredients and whisk until mixed well.
- Core the apples with an apple corer and slice them into thin slices.
- Cut the center of each slice with a small circle cookie cutter or the large end of a cupcake piping tip.
- Dip each slice into the egg until covered well.
- Then roll them into the flour mixture and cover well.
- Repeat step 3 and 4 so the batter will be nice and thick.
- Heat the oil in a skillet or a sauce pan until it reaches 365-370 degrees and be careful not to over heat it. It is easy to get it too hot so keep an eye on it.
- Drop a few apple slices at a time into the oil and cook for a couple of minutes on each side until they are a nice golden brown.
- Remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel for a minute or so.
- Then, transfer them to a cooling rack that is placed on a baking sheet to remove any extra oil.
You can serve these a few different ways. You can sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar as soon as you remove them from the oil or you can serve them with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. You can use store bought caramel or if you want to make your own, here is a recipe you can use.
If you sprinkle them with a cinnamon and sugar mixture, it is kind of like having a mini Apple pie to hold in your hand. I like them both ways but there is something wonderful about having them à La Mode and drizzled with warm caramel sauce. YUM!
