Rooster Cookies to Help Me Wake Up

A funny thing happened last week that led me to make these rooster cookies. Last week it rained a lot. On one of those cool rainy mornings I woke up to the alarm beeping a loud annoying sound in my right ear. As I struggled to see clearly, I was reaching to make the noise stop and decided to smash my alarm clock. It was early. I didn’t like the annoying sound of the alarm being in my ear to be the first thing I heard and it had to go. But how would I wake up from now on? It was that moment I decided I would rather be woke up by a rooster crowing while perched on my night stand than an annoying alarm clock.

They are messy and you have to feed them and it was way to early to worry about feeing something. I decided to make rooster cookies because you don’t have to feed cookies, you get to eat them. Best morning idea ever! Rooster cookies will wake you up just in time for a beautiful sunrise! Rooster cookies, rooster cookies, rooster cookies. YES!

The leaf tip makes great leaves and feathers. I think these rooster cookies are great with a big textured tail. I also think he would be cute with brown icing.

With the thick red thick in a bag (or bottle) and fit it with the #67 leaf tip,  hold the bag so the line of the tips are on the right and the left. Place the tip very close to the cookie and apply gentle pressure to the bag. Once the icing is touching the cookie, continue with the same pressure and move the the tip along the edge of the cookie until you reach the end. Stop the pressure and give a quick pull to break the icing. It should break in a point. If you  move too slow, you will have an end with two points as you will see in the upcoming photos.

There is a few things I want you to notice about this picture. The first is the end of the feathers. They are broken and look like a snake’s tongue. Hey, that would be another great thing to make with this piping tip. Broken tail feathers on rooster cookies don’t bother me because it will have a couple of layers and hide the mistakes. It may even look like your rooster is a bad dude and has been fighting in the barnyard. Either way, I don’t mind it.

The other thing is, the bottom layer has been drying for about 20 minutes so by adding the next layer, the feathers will hold their shape and won’t blend into each other.

If you have trouble with your icing colors bleeding due to humidity, you may want to let it dry for several hours.

PS-My friend Heather told me about the turkey lacer. As a matter of fact, she just sent me some in the mail and I use them every time I make cookies. Just be careful and don’t leave them laying around where the kiddos can get them. They are sharp and can cause an injury.
