Candle Cookies a Tutorial – NOT!
The other day I baked cookies. I decorated them with icing. I used my handy dandy little airbrush so each candle would have highlights and shadows. I stopped every few minutes to take pictures so I could share a step by step tutorial with you. I will admit I was a little picture happy and took a ton of pictures. I stopped every so often to look at the pictures in my camera and was pleased with the results. You see, all I wanted to accomplish that day was to share how to make these cute candle cookies with you.
You know what? The memory card in my camera had another idea for my photos. It decided to take pictures that looked like this!
Seriously? What is this? I could understand if I loaded the film into the camera backward or something but, digital photos? Really? This is not a good week! I burned my leg on Alan’s Jeep muffler. It is ugly with a capital “U” and now I have lost my tutorial pictures. UGH!
It wasn’t just one shot either. Check this out!
When A Tutorial for Candle Cookies Goes WRONG:
(may contain affiliate links)
This is a tutorial that has seriously gone wrong! I am not sure what happened. I checked the photos as I was taking pictures. I always check them. They were fine until I loaded them onto the computer. My heart sank! All that work. All those photos. What do I do now? I don’t have a tutorial to share with you.
As a thousand questions raced through my mind I began to panic so I put the memory card back into my camera to see if it was the computer, the camera or the memory card. I was shocked to see little annoying “?” where most of the images should be. Alright. Is this a joke? Where is the camera? Is someone pranking me? NO! My memory card has stored it’s last photos. It is done. I guess it was overworked and under-appreciated. It worked hard for me for a long time and now it is time to let it rest. Forever.
I decided I didn’t want to drive to the store so I went to Amazon and ordered a new card. I will appreciate this one more so it will treat me well and not eat my pictures. If you are curious, this is the card I bought. Go big or go home right?
I guess the point to this post is to always have an extra memory card and don’t stress over the little things in life. I could cry. I could be mad. I could stay up all night and remake candle cookies.
Or, I could be happy that I got a picture of the cake. I am going to bake more cookies and I might even walk to the mailbox and see if my new card is in there. It is about a mile to the mailbox and then I have to walk back up big hills. I think that calls for a nap. Don’t you?
Bear hugs,
Sorry you’ve had such a rough week Lisa! 🙁 But I have to say, this is the BEST…CUTEST cookie idea I’ve seen in a long time!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you! I am not stressing it Christine! I feel like there is a lesson to be learned in everything we do. I think I will download my pictures more often or tether my photos in Lightroom from now on. For those that don’t know, you can import photos directly into a Lightroom catalog and see on a your computer screen as you take the pictures. It is nice seeing the shots as you go and it means taking less photos because you can see what they look like when you shoot them.
These are so unique and adorable! Love the melted “wax” effect. I had a similar incident several years ago, way before I started blogging. Spent days making a baby shower cake taking tons of photos with actual film. I lost every photo. So glad for you that you were able to get one of the finished cookies..and what a great one it is! Love these candle cookies. 🙂
So frustrating! I am so glad though, that you were able to get the GORGEOUS photo of your cake! The candle cookies are so awesome! Pinning!
I’m so sorry this happened but you know what boo? That final shot is a money shot! It’s absolutely gorgeous! A tutorial would have been nice but that shot alone is enough for me to appreciate your awesomeness 🙂
I feel bad for you but at the same time I have to laugh. I am the worst photographer so I feel your pain! I don’t know how many times I’ve taken what I thought were dozens of fabulous photos only to find out my memory card wasn’t even in the camera! A commercial photographer I will never be. The candles though are just precious and that first photo is awesome! How flipping adorable!
Ow how annoying and you stayed so polite! Sorry to hear about your leg, sounds nasty, I normally manage to whack my leg into the toy bar! Ha ha ha. So sounds nice where you live, are you on a farm… how nice to have a little (long) contemplate on the way to the letter box. We’ve just moved from outside Sydney on 25 acres to a small country town about 100km south of Sydney and we can now walk into town for coffee, it’s about 3km so next time I do that I will think of you walking to your letter box. At least a camera memory card isn’t heavy!
Oh, I know how frustrated you must have been seeing those images on your computer after all of your hard work, but the good news is the candle cookies look amazing and so does that final image. I’ve cried and stressed over much less. You are a strong woman to get over it and move on.
Ugg. I’ve had these uphill battles myself. It sucks. I am sorry this didn’t work out. The candles cookies look brilliant though, and I want to eat them! 🙂
Oh no LISA! I can only imagine how upset you must have felt when the photos did not load – can’t believe your camera didn’t let you know the card was full. I just had that exact thing happen to me, only my camera would not take any more photos – thankfully, or I would still be using it! LOL With all the wonderful tutorials you’ve done in the past, we could use those steps with these cookies. I love how you cut the cookies to make different heights – the whole cake/cookie is fabulous!
The camera card wasn’t full Kim. It broke or died while it was loading the pictures onto my computer. The photos were there as I was shooting and even when I checked before placing the card in the computer slot. As they loaded they looked normal and then the got the crazy lines.
It is alright. At least I got the after picture! LOL
This is such a cool idea! Makes me wanna do something like this for Halloween!
Oh YES!! Halloween would be great! If you do it will you send me a picture? PLEASE????
I totally feel your pain. I was in a digital media class learning Photoshop and Illustrator, and 1/2 way through the semester, my card just corrupted when I popped it in the computer at the beginning of class one night. And it had my latest assignment on it that was due that night. Talk about frustrating! I was only able to recover a little bit from the card (sometimes you can recover corrupted files), but the card itself was toast. I am so glad the one picture was Ok to share. It’s beautiful! 🙂
Love the cookies! Great idea and incredible execution! You never cease to amaze me with your cookie decorating skill! I can only hope that someday I am half as talented! I keep working on it!
So sad! I HATE when I lose a memory card. The first time that happened to me, I was still in South Korea and lived nearly 1 1/2 hours from a place to buy a new one. I *may* have cried. But these candles are SOOOOOO pretty! I love the depth you get with airbrushing! And the rustic cake is so gorgeous!
It is so hard seeing all that work vanish. Then, you stand there for ever trying to decided what to do.
It’s a bummer the memory card stopped working but the photo you rescued it’s absolutely amazing!! You’re a very talented artist 😀
