Do you ever shoot off fireworks? If you don’t, let me encourage you to try it this year. I am one of the lucky ones that get to help set off the fireworks at the camp 4th of July Celebration. It is a massive show and there is never a dull moment. It takes timing, communication and a lake to jump into incase something goes wrong like when I accidentally shot my son Tylor with a roman candle. It sure was nice having a lake for him to jump into.

Incase you are wondering, yes that is a true story and Tylor wasn’t hurt. The container for the roman candle fell over after the first fiery burst shot out of it and Tylor happened to be in the direct line of fire as the second flaming ball shot out of the tube. He ran into the lake and wasn’t hurt at all.

Now I am not suggestion you set your son on fire this July 4th, but you can make these star cookies that actually sparkle to place on your holiday table. They are easy to make and your guests will get a bang out of them!

Just be careful and don’t set anything or anyone on fire like I did. Poor Tylor. And just to be safe, you may want to use the sparklers outside only. A picnic table seems like the perfect place for these cookies. 😉

Star Cookie Cutters in 3 different sizes- I used my new ones from Whisked Away Cutters (I didn’t use the smallest size but I did use the other three cutters.)
Sparklers
Turkey Lacer- if you don’t have one by now, you need to get one. It is not only great to use as a scribe tool, it is a great tool for projects like this.

  1. You will need one small, one medium and one larger star cookie.
  2. Once the cookies are baked, stack them on top of each other so you can make the hole for the sparkler. It is easier to make the holes before you add the icing.
  3. Use a sharp tool such as a turkey lacer to poke a hold through all of the cookies. I know this is weird but, once you poke the holes, try to look at those three cookies as a set. The reason being that the holes with match and the sparklers will stand straight once you stack them up.
  4. The sparklers I had were a bit long so I used a pair of needle nose pliers to clip it to a smaller size. This part is totally optional.
  5. Next, insert the sparker to make sure it stands nice and straight.

For all of these cookies, I used 15 second icing in a piping bag fitted with a #2 piping tip.

  1. Outline the large star with the red icing, the medium with the white icing and the small star with the blue icing.
  2. Flood each of the cookies with the appropriate colors leaving a circle around the hole on the red and white cookies. Let them dry for a few hours before moving to the next step.
  3. Once the cookies have set for a while, fill the circle area with icing.
  4. Immediately stack the cookies and insert the sparkler.

I do want to mention that placing a sparkler in the center of the cookies makes the cookie a decoration and therefore it should not be eaten. After the sparkle ashes fall all over them I am sure you will see why the are for decorations only. But hey, star cookies that actually sparkle are entertaining and we can’t expect them to look that good and be eaten can we!

Now that they are finished, I want to make some gold and silver cookies that actually sparkle for New Year’s. I think they would look great and will help us start the new year right.
