How to Make Simple Sheep Cookies Tutorial with Video | The Bearfoot Baker

I love animals. As a kid, I constantly looked for some kind of animal to see even if we were in the car. I would look out the window hoping to see some sort of wildlife because that brought me great joy. There were always cows, horses, dogs, and cats no matter what direction we drove, but sometimes I would get excited because I would see sheep. I loved cute little fluffy sheep, but I never got to pet one or feed it grain from my hand. The simple fact that I saw them made me happy and it still makes me happy today! If seeing a sheep can make me happy I wonder how making sheep cookies will make me feel.

  • Begin by making a batch of cookie dough and cut out the flower cookies and the gingerbread cookies. Before you bake them, trim the gingerbread cookies below the arms. Use your finger to round off the dough before you bake them.
  • Bake according to the recipe directions and let them cool before you begin to decorate.

Who knew a gingerbread man cookie cutter would make a great sheep head!

  • Next, make a batch of royal icing and tint some black. Add a few drops of AmeriColor White Food Gel Color to make the white icing looks super white.

  • Outline and flood two of the flower petals black and you can decide if the legs touch or if they are separate like in the picture above. I decided to make most of them touch so I didn’t have to worry about sprinkling that little space between them with the white nonpareils.
  • Outline and flood the sheep’s head with the black icing and add two candy eyes while the icing is wet.
  • Let the royal icing dry completely and that could take up to eight hours or more depending on where you live. It’s important for the black to dry before you add the white icing so it will reduce the chances of the colors bleeding together.
