Pumpkin Royal Icing Decorations with a How to Video

How to Make Simple Little Pumpkin Royal Icing Decorations with a How to Video | The Bearfoot Baker

The other day we make simple Spooky Candy Eye decorations by using stickers we found at the store. What I didn’t mention was picking up a pack of fall stickers to make colorful Pumpkin Royal Icing Decorations so we can have simple colorful accents for our fall cookies. I’ve seen different pumpkin candies at different stores this year but when you make them yourself you can customize the size and colors so they’ll be perfect decorations for your cookies made with colors you love. How’s that for customization?

  • Start by buying a piece of foam board and cutting it into pieces a little bigger than your copy paper. Foam board is affordable, lightweight, easy to store and it will make a great base for your royal icing templates.
  • Next, make your template by placing the pumpkin stickers to a piece of copy paper and be sure to leave room in between each sticker so you can easily remove the pumpkin royal icing decorations once the icing is dry.
  • Use the double-sided tape to attach the pumpkin template to the foam board.
  • Cover the template with a piece of wax paper and use the masking tape to hold it in place. Make sure the wax paper doesn’t have wrinkles or it will mess up the royal icing pumpkins.

  • Once you’ve made the template and covered it with the wax paper your ready to make your pumpkin royal icing decorations.
  • The fun thing about making your own edible decorations is you can make them any color and size you want. Purple, blue and white pumpkins add a little character to your cookies and keep things fun.
  • Begin piping the pumpkins by piping the outside sections first and letting them dry for about 10-20 minutes. This will allow the royal icing to form a crust so your pumpkin will have sections once it’s dry. If you don’t let the icing dry your pumpkins won’t have the traditional sections of pumpkin and they will dry flat. Flat pumpkins are adorable so you might want to make a few of them as well.
  • Place the pumpkins in front of a fan so it will make the top layer of the icing dry with a shine.

  • Once the outer sections of the pumpkins have dried for a little while, add a brown stem in the center. If you live in a humid climate you may need to let your pumpkin edges dry longer to help prevent the colors from bleeding onto each other.
  • Let the stem dry for an additional 10-20 minutes.

  • Pipe the center of the pumpkin and allow the royal icing to dry completely.

  • If you’ll notice I didn’t follow the pattern of the template on all of the pumpkins because I wanted to take the easy road to royal icing pumpkins. If you want to add a vine or leaves you can but I find it easier to add the little details once the pumpkin royal icing decoration is placed on the decorated cookies. Royal icing decorations are easier to store if you keep them simple so you don’t have to worry about them breaking.

  • Once the royal icing is dry, remove the wax paper from the foam board cut it into smaller pieces so it will be easier to remove the pumpkins.

  • Use the bench scraper to help remove the pumpkins from the wax paper.

  • Fold the edge of the paper over the edge of the bench scraper and pull it along the backside of the scraper because this is a great way to get the royal icing pumpkin off in one piece. It pulls the transfers over the edge of the bench scraper and off of the wax paper.

  • Be sure the royal icing is completely dry or they will break as you try to remove them.
  • Also, be sure to make extra pumpkins because some of them will break no matter what you do.
  • If the stem breaks off don’t throw it away. You can still use your cute pumpkin. Once you place it on the cookie, pipe a stem. It will still save time when you decorate.

Royal icing decorations are some of my favorite decorating tools and the good thing about buying stickers is the package usually has different designs like pumpkins and leaves. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a great deal for about $1 and there are so many different designs to choose from! What kind of stickers are you going to use to make your own royal icing decorations? Leave a comment and let me know!
