Balloon Royal Icing Decoration & Templates
One of the most popular cookie and cupcake requests from me are for birthdays. I wanted to come up with something that would save me time so I made some balloon royal icing transfers and templates. I keep these on hand sorted in little jars by size and color for those last minute birthday requests.
I can’t tell you how much time they save me. If someone calls me and asks for cute cupcakes and they want them asap, I pull out all my transfers and add them to the cupcake swirls and I am finished in about 2 hours. The hardest thing is waiting for the cupcakes to cool so I can add the icing decorations.
I found some great examples of using transfers by some really talented and creative decorators. These Nerdy Cookies by Sweet Sugar Belle couldn’t be any cuter and I love the royal icing glasses. These Love Cupcakes by Sweetopia are simple and stunning. I love the letters in the cupcakes. Klickitat Street’s Silly Pumpkin Faces are super cute and I can’t wait until Fall to make some.

I didn’t take step by step pictures of these as I decorated them. I had a really busy weekend with my birthday and Mother’s Day and totally flaked out. And I was so into piping with these fun colors, I forgot to take pictures. Please forgive me but, I promise you, you will like the upcoming “Template Tuesday” transfers.
I am working on your suggestions and would love to know any other royal icing templates you want. So far we have had goldfish, starfish, flowers, eyes and now we have balloons. Look for some cute critters and more birthday transfers in the near future.

Happy Creating,
Keeping balloons in stock is a fantastic idea!! Really, that’s genius! I only bake for fun, but so often I don’t even have time to make treats for all the friend events that I’d like to. These would make cookie sharing so much easier. Thanks so much Lisa!
I love my balloon transfers! They are so handy for birthdays, shower or even a set of thank you cupcakes!
You’re soooo smart! I can think of 101 ways to use these already!!!
Good! You can tell me the other 95 ways! Hahahah!
Balloons are so versatile. You can bunch them together or single them out… so many ways of using these! Thanks, Lisa!
Every Template Tuesday is better than the last! These are adorable, I love all the colors. I’m thinking of trying some little black birds to put in cute cages as my first transfer try. I’ve been obsessed with birds lately. I’ll post my latest cookies on Pinterest once I get up enough courage. They’re MUCH better than the last ones but still have room for improvement.
Thanks for being such a great inspiration!
Black birds will be super cute! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Seriously great idea! Balloons are so easy and cute, but did I think of that? Nooo… And NikkiK is right – Template Tuesday ROCKS!
What a great idea! Love seeing the templates you come up with and how you use them! TFS!
You are so sweet Terri! I am so glad you like “Template Tuesday!”
LOVE all the color. What a fabulous idea.
Thanks Sarah! I am happy you like them:)
Adorable 🙂 What a great idea about keeping transfer on hand for cupcake decorations – you’re a genius!
Hahah! I am not a genius Jennifer! I am just always pressed for time and necessity is the mother of invention! LOL
Hi
I recently made some royal transfer eyes/buttons that are white. When I place them on my (wet) cookie, they are absorbing the color they are placed on. At first I thought it was just because I put them on red…but it happened on green, pink and black as well. Any ideas as to why this is happening or what I am doing wrong here? (my FB page has pics for visual..its my Mickey’s and Yo Gabba Gabba Brobi)
Thanks!!
Heather
Hi Heather,
White icing is hard! I am working on a few experiments now about why colors bleed. Right now I can suggest a few things that might help.
1. Try to use less water when mixing your icing because thinner icing will soak up color faster than the thick icing.
2. The second thing is to make your transfers a few weeks in advance so they will be completely dry. Sometimes when we think they are completely dry, they are still a little wet in the center.
3. Look at my monkey post to see how to apply them to a dry base icing. If I use white, I like to apply it on a dry base cookie to help with the bleeding.
4. When using white, try to make it the base color instead of the transfer color. I know you can’t always do that but, it will help in some cases.
I will share more bleeding tips soon.
Brilliant Tuesday template this week! I’m going to shrink down your template to
make them into sprinkles. I should keep the template on hand because I can use any color leftover RI to
make the balloons. Thanks for another wonderful one!
I would love to see the balloon sprinkles! Will you send me a picture? 😉
For some reason this post makes me desperately want Lucky Charms. Perhaps you can make all the marshmallow shapes into cookies? And then feed them to the lowly souls at the bottom of the hill?? (If you want to include those who are halfway in the Blair and Nurse’s Station, that’s fine too I guess. But they are not quite as lowly as us bottom-of-the-hill dwellers.)
I would love to send goodies to the bottom of the hill! Name it and I will make it just for you!!!
Having all these different royal icing transfers on hand is such a brilliant idea, Lisa! Thanks for the inspiration. I gotta start doing this with my left over royal icing!
It is such a good way to use extra icing. No waste and you get things that will save you time in the future:)
I have a container of purchased royal icing decorations … you have inspired me to sit down and make my own 😉
I hope you do!!! You can make them better, get the size you want and they cost a lot less! I looked at 6 decorations at Hobby Lobby today and it was $2.49!
these are awesome! balloons are something I never think of, but they would be so cute and perfect on top of a cupcake!
Thank you so much for providing these templates each week. I know it takes time away from you. Again, thanks.
So super cute! I’m going to have to start putting in requests for shapes I want, because I love the templates! =) I’m thinking stars are bound to be in the works (I hope!) Thanks for the link too =)
Please let me know if you want a design! I will try my best to make it!
