Royal Icing Watermelons & Templates

About a year ago I made some royal icing watermelons to use as cupcake toppers. They turned out really cute and I couldn’t wait to make the templates to share with you. I don’t have pictures of my old cupcakes, but I do have several watermelon templates to share with you.

Is there anything more perfect than a nice cold watermelon on a hot summer day? It is my favorite summer snack so it made perfect sense to make watermelon royal icing transfers. If I decided to throw a watermelon party, I will take lots of pictures to share with you. It will be fun and we can pretend you are here with us.

I know there are several templates of the royal icing watermelons, but there are so many cute designs that I couldn’t decide on just one so six seemed appropriate. If you want a different template you can Google and find an image you like.

When I made these before, I used 2 different colors of icing, but this time, I wanted to simplify it. Airbrushing the lines is an easy way and I really liked the way they turned out. If you don’t have an airbrush gun, you can use two different colors of green and mix them with a toothpick.

Oval and Round Royal Icing Watermelons:

  1. Begin by printing and preparing your templates like this.
  2. Next, with the brown icing, pipe the stem with a #2 tip.
  3. Then, outline and flood with the green icing and let it dry for about twenty minutes.
  4. Once they’re dry, airbrush the lines with AmeriColor Green. Then, airbrush the edges, and if you need airbrushing tips click here.
  5. If you want to add a little detail to the stem you can paint a few lines with a fine paintbrush and a little brown food color gel.

  1. For the slices, begin by outlining and flooding the slice with red and let it dry for about twenty minutes.
  2. Airbrush the bottom and right edge of the slice with AmeriColor Holiday Red.
  3. Pipe a line of white at the bottom and let it dry.
  4. Pipe a thick line of green to the bottom.
  5. Once the watermelons are dry, paint on the seeds with AmeriColor Black with a detail brush. You can use the wooden end of the paintbrush to make three dots. Then, use the paintbrush to make it a teardrop shape.

I am looking forward to using these royal icing watermelon transfers on cute cookies. I have been looking for some party ideas and found Simple Watermelon Slice Cookies by Sweet Sugarbelle, and  Watermelon Krispie Treats by Glorious Treats. They each have a great tutorial and I can’t wait to make them. I also linked these to Whipperberry’s Friday Flair Link Party and you can see the party here.
