Gum Drop Royal Icing Transfers
I have always loved gum drop cookies because they are so colorful and happy covered in all that sanding sugar. As I was planning today’s “Template Tuesday,” I decided to go with a Christmas in July theme and gum drop royal icing transfers seemed to be to perfect choice.
I know it is hot outside but, this is a perfect example of being prepared for the holidays. If we make royal icing transfers ahead of time, our holiday baking will be so much more enjoyable.

I really like decorating cookies. Lately, I have been on cloud 9 with all the RI Transfers. It is at the top of my “Fun Things To Do” list. Anytime I can pipe and cover things with sanding sugar, it makes me happier than the people on those Geico commercials.
I know this is the second time I have used this photo but just look at how colorful these cuties are! I want to throw a gum drop themed party now. Maybe even a Candy Land Party. Everyone can dress up as their favorite color gum drop. I want to be red. No, maybe yellow. OK, OK I will be orange and then change into my red costume. I know I am a little off track and will try to be more focused for the rest of the post. Fingers crossed it works;)
Once your print the templates and tape them to a flat work surface, outline the row you want to pipe first. Flood them and sprinkle with sanding sugar immediately. The icing needs to be wet for the sanding sugar to stick to it.
I have found that working in rows is a great way to add sanding sugar to RI Transfers. Work one color at a time.
I know there are probably 100 ways to do this but, this is what works for me. I outlined and flooded a row with the same color of icing, (purple in this photo) and then covered it with the same color of sanding sugar as the icing. Then, I moved to the next row of the same color I just outlined and flooded (purple again) and repeated the process. Once all the purple gum drops were outlined, flooded and covered in sugar, I dumped the sugar onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Add the sanding sugar back to the bottle and move to the next color of gum drop.

These make me so happy! I could stare at these beauties the whole day. If you did have a gum drop party, I’d definitely come dressed up as the lime green ones 🙂
Oh Aida I am so glad you would be the green one! I will take lots of pictures of us:) Hahaha
Hello I have been having fun making the transfers from your tutorials. How do you store them?
I store the not so delicate ones (such as eyes) in jars and the ones like the popsicles, I store them in a container that will allow them to lay flat. I will do a post for you soon and show you)
Love all your ideas! I am looking for a apple template. have you ever made those apple transfers?
I don’t have one now but, I will make one for you in a few weeks.
I have an idea…wouldn’t it be easier to have multiple rows of the same color beside each other? Just a thought…
Love the fun transfers!
Yes it would but, it would not have looked as good in my photo! Hahahaha
Well goody goody gumdrops – these are so cute! I was going to be the pink gumdrop, but found it was taken. Maybe we could go as twin gumdrops??
I would love to be your twin!!!!
I love gum drops, especially around Christmas! I can see these RI transfers as handy accessories for gingerbread houses too!
