Sweet Sugar Belles Bus Cutter-Truck Shaded with Food Gel Pens
Did you know that Sweet Sugar Belle is designing cookie cutters? Well, she is and I couldn’t be more excited for her. And us! Doesn’t it make sense for cookie decorators to make cookie cutters? When I saw Sweet Sugar Belles bus cutter, I not only saw a bus, I saw an old-timey truck with pumpkins in the back. I thought it would be the perfect cookie to kick off fall. I couldn’t wait to get started.
Seriously, who knows what cookie decorators want better than someone who actually decorates cookies for a living? Callye is so talented and has the amazing ability to see multiple designs in a single cutter so I knew her designs would be inspirational for us all.

I trimmed off the top of the cutter before I baked it. I just moved the bus cutter down and took a little off the top to make it a better size for the truck. You don’t have to do this step but, I liked the way it turned out.
Begin with the light blue icing and outline and flood the side mirrors and the back window.
Then, with the red icing, outline the body of the truck.
Next, outline the fenders, around the window and tailgate.
This next part is a bit different than anything I have ever done before. I piped a little red icing on the back of the truck and spread it around with a paintbrush. When it dried, it was a little dull so I painted on a thin (very thin) coat of corn syrup. It dried smooth and wasn’t tacky like I was afraid it would. I think it added a nice shine.
I wanted the back of the truck to be flat so the fenders, tailgate and pumpkins would stand out and not be flat on the cookie.
Then, outline and flood the fenders with red icing and let them dry for about 20 minutes. While you are waiting on them to dry, outline and flood the tires with the black icing and the two large pumpkins with the orange icing.
Flood the tailgate and let it dry for about 20 minutes. Next, outline and flood the bumper with the gray icing.
Then, flood the remaining pumpkin with the orange icing and add a brown stem to each one. Let the cookie dry overnight so it will be ready for the shading.
This shading technique is simple and affordable. You don’t have to have an airbrush gun to shade cookies. All you need is a brown food gel pen.
Use the brown pen to mark the finder. Then, with a damp paintbrush, spread the gel into the area you want shaded. It is so simple and I think you will be amazed by the effect it will add. Repeat it on each section of the truck by following the pictures.
I love this cutter and this new shading effect.
Okay, I wanted to make my old Ford truck to be red but, now that I made a few, I think I like the blue one best.
I can’t wait to see what other cookie cutters Sweet Sugar Belle makes. I know they will be fun and I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Bear hug,
Hi Lisa,
I am in love with these cookies. Wow! I love how you think. I bought the cookie jar cutter but going to replicate what sweetsugarbelle has done. I am amazed at how your mind thinks, so creative!
OMG so cute! I love these. I also saw a taxi when I saw the cutter. so fun!
Her cutters are so great and can be used for so many things! And this is the first of the reinvented cookies (I’m sure not the last) and it could possibly be the cutest! So glad you’re back in the wagon, (so to speak) and feeling better! 🙂
The minute I saw this cutter (and her others) I rushed to Karen’s to order. When my daughter saw it, she guessed an old car, but this truck is the CUTEST thing ever! Love how you did it…just might have to try this myself. Thanks for sharing!
Callye did make a very cute set of cutters and you took the school bus one to a whole new level with these cookies! If these aren’t the cutest old pumpkin hauling trunks I’ve seen then I sure don’t know what is. Your tips on aging the truck are great! Got any tips on how to make an old gal look younger?! 😉
Love the new shading technique! It really looks great and is perfect someone like me sans fancy equipment. Tx for sharing, Lisa!
Awesome idea! I love it!
I ADORE these cookies so much! I have that cutter too, so thanks for the tutorial, including the shading:) They look so fun and spectacular!!!
Such a clever use of the bus cutter. I love old trucks and what better use for them than to haul some fall pumpkins!
Great design!! I want to try it when I get better at decorating.
Lisa!! This is incredible! I love the truck cookie design and this new shading technique!! You are a genius! Thanks for sharing.
Lisa, these are DARLING!!!! Hubby is such a car-guy…however, they MUST be “CHEVY” if they are in our house! LOL Cookies are becoming more and more a cross-over to decorative painting. I’m loving it!
Blessings, Donna B.
LOVE these cookies…how creative! We have lots of old cars and have had a couple of old 50’s Ford trucks….awesome cookies!:)
These are adorable!! They are so creative!
These are adorable Lisa!!! I’m not sure what happened…I used to get your blog in my news feed and have signed up for it a few times but I almost never see it now. 🙁 Any way you can check for me? Thank you! Christine – Sugar Cravings
Hi Christine, how were you following me? Feeder, Google Reader, or email? How do you want to follow me now and I will set you up:)
If you could set it up so that I receive notifications via email that would be great! Thanks Lisa!
I just love the way these look and the shading give it such an “authentic” feel…if at all possible with a cookie. Another great post!!
I didn’t know an old pick-up truck could be so cute!! The pumpkins in the back are genius, Lisa! 🙂
My son loves the book Little Blue Truck. These cookies would be perfect for a birthday party themed after that book! Great shading.
This is just INCREDIBLE! I heart you, ya know!
Love what you did with the cutter, Lisa . The marker and paintbrush tip is genius!
I just followed a link from another site for these cookies. My father would love this idea. I have one serious problem though, if I gave him Ford vehicles I think he might disown me. He does NOT buy anything but GM vehicles. He was not happy with me when in my early 30s YEARS ago I bought my first new car all on my own and got a Chrysler. He never said much but I noticed the next time I went to buy a car, he went along and guess the first place we went, yep, the Chevrolet dealership. It did pay off as he was known for being an excellent customer and got me a fantastic price. For some reason many folks around here were like that. I remember as a kid hearing gm owners saying Ford stood for fix or repair daily. Even kids would get in arguments about this subject and we didn’t drive or own one. In the past 30 years though thousands of new people have moved to our little town and commute to DC or Baltimore for work. These people don’t care about this sort of thing so you don’t openly hear this debate any more. So in light of this, have any old Chevy trucks in your portfolio?
Hahahah Pamela! My did was the same way about cars. I have a Jeep now and he says it stands for, “Just Empty Every Pocket!” LOL Thanks for the walk down memory lane! 😉
I don’t have any Chevy trucks but I am sure you could tweak that one for your dad. As long as it says CHEVY on the back I think he will like it!
Bear hugs!
How much would you charge for 25 of these cookies? My sons name is Ford and his 1st birthday party will be on November 27th. The theme is vintage trucks and pumpkins. I was googling different ideas and this popped up and it would be PERFECT!! Please let me know. I live in South Carolina so you can factor in shipping as well if you’d be willing to make these.
Hi Ellen,
I’m sorry I don’t sell cookies. I love teaching others how to make them.
I hope your son has a great birthday!
