Have you ever had a sad or bad thought when you look at sprinkles? I think they are magical because you can’t be sad when you look at them. I discovered how to get even more joy from them. DIY sprinkles are fun to make and use. I seriously can’t stop smiling when I make them.

I know you can buy sprinkles everywhere now but, it is much cheaper to make your own. You can use your leftover icing and before you know it, you will have a cabinet full of colors that you like and use. Storing them couldn’t be easier. Just put them in an airtight container and keep them in a cool dry place away from sunlight. I like storing mine in cute little Ball Jars with a simple piece of jute around them.

Another good thing about DIY Sprinkles is you have full control over how thick they are. For mini cookies, you may want thin sprinkles or if you are working on a larger cookie, you might want thicker sprinkles. The best part for me is the color choices I have. I can make them any color I want so they will match my color palette perfectly.

To make them, you need to layout a few pieces of wax paper and pipe some lines. Don’t stress over the perfect line or worry if they break when you pipe them. Make the lines along the wax paper and pipe as many lines as you can and as close as you can. Let it dry overnight.

Once they are completely dry, gently fold over the wax paper and it will break the lines into sprinkles. If they are a little longer than you like just fold the wax paper on the pile and gently push until you get the desired length.

These are a little long so I need to give them a little smooch.

Here is a little tip for you. If you pipe multiple colors onto one sheet of wax paper, you will end up with mixed colors of sprinkles. It would be good to make red, white and blue for the fourth of July but, not if you just wanted red sprinkles for Valentine’s Day. If you like to make a solid color and mix them as you need, you should only pipe one color onto each set of wax paper.

I just love royal icing! You can do so much with it.  If you store them in cute little jars like these, you can display them on a shelf in your kitchen or craft room and they become decorations. See, I told you sprinkles will make you smile!

Bear hugs,
