Simple Dinosaur Cookies
A few months ago I was asked to make dinosaur cookies. Not cute colorful dinosaur cookies. Skeleton dinosaur cookies. I looked for cookie cutters that had the skeleton imprints that you push into the cookies because honestly, I didn’t know where to begin. I found a set of cutters on Amazon but I didn’t want to pay over $10 for a set of cutters I would only use once or twice. I already own a lot of dinosaur cookie cutters so why did I need to buy more? Then, I looked at dinosaur skeletons and they didn’t look difficult once you really look at them. If I can do it, you can make these simple dinosaur cookies without a pattern.
Let me show you how simple they are to make. I promise you can do it without a pattern.
Supplies for Simple Dinosaur Cookies:
Brown 15 Second Icing – in a decorating bag fitted with a #2 decorating tip
White 15 Second Icing- in a decorating bag fitted with a #2 decorating tip

If you want to buy the imprint cookie cutters, you can find them here but I promise you can make them with the dinosaur cutters you already have.
Look at the T-Rex. It isn’t difficult if you take one bone at a time and follow the cookie cutter. Also, you don’t have to worry about the icing bleeding because if it does bleed it will make the bones look aged like they have been in the dirt for a really long time.
Okay, let me show you how simple these guys are to make.
- Outline and flood all the cookies with the brown 15 second icing and sprinkle them with sanding sugar while the icing is wet.
- Let them dry for about 20 minutes before adding the bones.
- Start with the skull and follow the top of the cookie cutter and outline a head with an open mouth. Just take a deep breath and go for it!
- Then, make a circle for the eye, and the nose and one little one in between them.
- Next, flood the head and use a toothpick or BooBoo Stick to pull the icing away from the skull to make a few teeth.
Now for the body:
- See the little hump on the back? Go a little farther down the back and make a rectangle shape.
- Now add the leg bones one at a time. The first one looks like the letter “I” and you can follow the picture for the other leg bones and toes.
- Now make a bone for the arm and give him three fingers.
- Next, make a line down the tummy.
Now for the Spine:
- Pipe a line down the back and then pipe smaller lines across it to make the spine.
- Guess what? You just made a t-rex skeleton cookie. Congrats!
The Pterodactyl is really simple to make.
- Outline and flood the pterodactyl with the brown icing and add sprinkles while the icing is wet.
- Let it dry for about 20 minutes.
- Next, pipe the head with the white icing leaving a hole for the eye.
- Then, add cute little leg bones and a letter “I” at tip of each wing.
- Add a few more letter “I’s” and a spine. I forgot to take a picture of the spine but you can look at the top or bottom picture.
This guy is mostly a big spine with a skull and a few leg bones. If you follow the shape of the cutter it will become a skeleton right before your eyes.
The triceratops cookie is a big head with a spine and legs. It is so easy I am not going to break it down. Once you make the skull, follow the shape of the cutter to make the spine and he will look awesome in no time. Easy peasy!
I don’t know why these cookies looked so intimidating because they were actually very simple and fun. I learned a lesson while making these cookies. I learned to stop being intimidated and just take one step at a time and you can make and do anything you want. I think that works for life as well as cookies.
Bear hugs,
Lisa, I love you so much I am kissing you right now. Not on the lips but close. My soon to be five year old niece is having a dinosaur birthday party in a few weeks. She was clear with me that she wanted dinosaur cookies but not silly dinosaurs. Not pink dinosaurs. Not cartoon dinosaurs. REAL dinosaurs. So I planned to do bones but wanted something just more than that….THESE are them! I love you! Pucker up!!!
SMOOCH ANITA!! I am glad your niece is getting her dino wishes! I hope she has the best birthday EVER!!
Oh my gosh, I LOVE these! I MUST make some for my grandsons that live close to the Smithsonian! When I visited in the fall we went, and of course the giant dinosaur skeletons fascinated them! Thanks so much, Lisa; they look awesome!
SUE! It sounds like your grandson lives in a great location. Dinosaurs any time he wants! What could be better than that?
FYI-I wanted to make a chocokate cake and break it into crumbs for the dirt but I ran out of time. He might enjoy that and you can even add a lake in the dirt with blue icing. I think that would be a cute little snack plate. Not that I want to give him a sugar hight, but you know, that is kind of what I do to kiddos! LOL
Thanks for the great suggestions! They actually live in Maryland (45 min. drive), but compared to my distance of 3000 miles, I consider that pretty close. 🙂
I agree! 45 minutes is not bad! LOL
I have these cutters for my grandsons..Thank you..
You have made them “formidable!”
When you make them take a picture for me Monique! I can’t wait to see your dino cookies!! 😉
These are just too cute. I have a soft spot for dinosaurs, and so as soon as I saw the title of this post, I knew I’d love the cookies. They’re even cuter than I was expecting!
I absolutely adore what you did with the dinosaur – so creative to make the skeleton that way!
