Watermelon Cookie Platter with Video
Have you made any cookie platters lately? Well, if you’re looking for a fun idea I’ve got one for you. It’s simple because it’s made with circle cookies.
There are 71 – 1 1/2″ circle cookies in the watermelon above so start baking as soon as possible. When I first designed this platter I made it with 70 cookies. Later, I decided to make a small watermelon slice to add to the top corner of this photo and I really like the way they look together. The next time I make this platter I will add a few slices to the table to help pull everything together because a few slices of melon look amazing with this platter.

How to Make a Watermelon Cookie Platter:
Before we get started I thought you might like a video to see how to decorate and assemble this simple platter. You aren’t going to believe how easy it is.
Watermelon Cookie Tutorial:
When I started this cookie project I didn’t know how many cookies it would take to make a cute watermelon cookie platter. I decided to bake up a bunch of circle cookies, cross my fingers, and hope it would turn out as I had pictured it. It worked perfectly and I am thrilled with the results because watermelons are fun and delicious.
Here is the number of cookies in the colors you need if you want to make a watermelon cookie platter like mine. I thought I’d share the number so you don’t have to guess.
- 33 Red Cookies – AmeriColor Super Red with a few drops of AmeriColor Lemon Yellow- It makes a nice watermelon red color.
- 24 Green Cookies – AmeriColor Leaf Green
- 8 Half Red and Half Green Cookies
- 6 Red Cookies with 2 Licorice Pastel Candy Rods
For a grand total of 71 cookies.
Here is what the platter looked like when I laid it out the first time. I made three rows for a total of 70 circle cookies. If you are looking for a platter that is a little larger or a little smaller, you can adjust the number of cookies and even try using a different size cookie cutter until you get the watermelon cookie platter that’s the right size for you.
After you have planned your platter (or let’s just say you’re following the numbers for mine) outline 24 cookies with green icing.
If you want to know how my cookies dry with a little bit of shine this is how I do it. I dry them in front of a fan. Sweet Sugar Belle taught us how to do it and it is one of the best cookie tips ever! Thanks, Callye!
Also, I have discovered that if you’re decorating cookies with the same shape and same color of icing you can place them on cake boards so you can decorate them really fast without having to touch them. Just spin the board as you decorate. You can see how it works in the video.
Next, outline and flood 33 cookies with red icing and let them dry in front of the fan.
Next, use a food-safe marker and place a line in the middle of 8 cookies so it’ll be easy to pipe. Decorate the bottom half with green icing and let them dry for an hour or so. Then, make a white line along the top edge of the green and let it dry for about another hour. Finish these cookies by decorating the top with red icing.
I wanted to mention that I wasn’t worried about the royal icing colors bleeding together. Real watermelons don’t have a perfect straight white line where the rind meets the flesh so it’s okay if there’s a little color bleeding in the cookies.
Outlined and flood the last six cookies with red icing.
Place the seeds on the cookies while the icing is wet and you can do this by adding Licorice Pastel Candy Rods or black icing.
Now all that’s left is to stack them and that’s the fun part because you can see it come together. If you want to use 70 cookies in the watermelon cookie platter you can. Or you can add an extra cookie with the seeds. Don’t assemble the watermelon as tight so you can use fewer cookies.
Well, what do you think? Do you like it? It was inspired by this cupcake platter by Cake Wiz because I fell in love with it the minute I saw it. I knew I had to make some kind of cookie version, but if you aren’t into a watermelon (I can’t imagine that) don’t worry because here is a Pizza Cookie Platter a lot like this one!

Hi Lisa. Cookies are bright! It stains the tongue?
Hi Lana,
Anytime you add food color to icing there is a chance your tongue will turn colors. The good thing about this is the cookies and your tongue are the same color! LOL
Lisa, Very clever and very cute! These cookies are just the right size for those who prefer a small cookie. Thanks for sharing your techniques.

Thanks Karen! They are so EASY it is now my new favorite!
And you are AWESOME!! 😉
Lisa – you mentioned using a fan to dry your cookies – what are your thoughts on a fan vs a dehydrator? Thanks!
I think both of them work well. I also think it depends on how much space you have for storage. My cabinets are full of cookie cutters so I chose the fan. It works for me!
