Spooky Rose Cookies with Creepy Fondant Spiders
Have you made rose swirl cookies yet? Have you made them with creepy fondant spiders? Spiders freak me out because they can crawl on anything at any time and I think they should crawl onto your cookies this Halloween.
Let’s think outside of the box for a minute. When I think of spiders, I think spider webs, but keep in mind you don’t have to make spider web cookies every time you want to make some creepy spiders. Instead, you can make rose cookies and it will probably be more spooky than spider webs.
I saw a picture on Pinterest that inspired these cookies. Want to see it? Okay, here it is. Pretty creepy huh? All I could think about was making a cookie version of them but I wanted to keep the cookies simple. Rose cookies seemed like the perfect choice.
Beware because once you start making them, you will become addicted and have them all over your house in every kind of container you can imagine! I
Supplies for Spooky Rose Cookies with Creepy Fondant Spiders:
Round Cookies any size
Thick Orange Royal Icing – I added a drop of brown to Wilton Orange
Piping bag and a #1M
Fondant Spiders
Optional
- Cookie Pop Sticks
- Thick White Icing
- If you don’t want to use royal icing, you can make them with buttercream frosting, but be careful because buttercream doesn’t dry hard like royal icing so if you stack them, they could get damaged.
I have already made a rose swirl cookie tutorial that has a lot of ‘how to’ pictures. This time I want to show you how to make them on a stick and I made a video you will find towards the end of this post so you can see it in action.
Just remember when making rose swirl cookies you need to remember 2 things.
- Your icing consistency is very important. The royal icing needs to be thick!
- The decorating bag needs to be at 90° angle while you are making the roses.
That is all there is to making these spooky rose cookies.
Begin by finding the center of the cookie. Hold the bag at a 90° and start piping in a circular motion.
Continue the circular motion until you reach the edge of the cookie.
When you get to the edge, stop applying pressure on the piping bag and give a quick little pull to break the icing.
Perfect!
If you want to make rose cookies or any other cookies on a stick, all you need is thick royal icing and a cookie pop stick. Put a thick royal icing circle on the back of the cookie and stick a cookie stick so it will dry and hold your cookie in place. Be sure to let the icing dry completely before you stand the cookies up.
You can use a baking rack to help hold the cookie stick in place so they dry nice and straight.
See, these cookies are simple and not that creepy because you can eat the spiders and they won’t bite back.
Remember when I said spiders freak me out? Well, they still do, but I will admit that I like these rose cookies with a little spider bling!

Bear hugs,
These are cute. I do have a question though. Can you actually eat them with that rose of royal icing or are they more to look pretty? Just curious. I’ve made cookies with crusting buttercream roses but never with that much royal icing so I’m curious. Thanks!
You can eat them Lisa. Just take smaller bites. LOL
Lisa, These cookies are very cute and perfect for a Halloween party. Thanks for sharing your technique.
You do such a fantastic job on each of your cookies! These are the perfect blend of pretty and creepy, Lisa! Those spiders!!!
