Reindeer Head Cookies-for Christmas
Have you seen all of the deer decors out there in shopping land? I am so in love with all the rustic woodland things on the shelves! First flannel (How to airbrush plaid Cookies) and now deer. Why does the fun have to stop in the stores? I think we should make Reindeer Head Cookies. What do you think?
What I like most about these is they will work for so many different occasions or themes. You can give them for a man’s birthday (think hunting), Christmas, Father’s Day or you can use them in a woodland setting. Best of all, Â you can give them to a country loving Nana like me!

Rustic Deer Head Video:
Here’s a little tip for you. Did you see the wet icing moving like the blob as I airbrushed? I think it’s funny. Just remember if you choose to airbrush when the icing is wet, do it immediately after you pipe it. If you wait until the icing forms a crust, the air from the airbrush gun can cause the icing to crack.
Deer Head Tutorial:
- Mix up a batch of your favorite Sugar Cookie Recipe, Chocolate, or Gingerbread Cookie Recipe.
- Cut out some reindeer head shapes and bake them according to the recipe directions.
- Once they are baked, let them cool completely.
- Outline the reindeer head cookies with the brown icing.
- Pipe it with a wavy line so it will look like bark from a tree.
- Once the outline is made, go back over it and make it a little thinker.
- When you start making the line around the antlers thicker, they might fill in and that is alright. I personally tried to make some thinner, but both ways look good so don’t stress over it.
Time to Airbrush:
- Next airbrush the inside and outside of the brown outline. You can airbrush when the icing is wet or you can wait and let it dry for a few minutes.
- When you are airbrushing the reindeer head cookies, try to spray the edges only, but if you spray the entire outline it will be fine. If you leave some of the edge uncovered by the airbrush, it will add depth to the cookie.
- After your airbrush, the outline, let it dry for a few hours before moving to the next step.
- Flood the inside of the reindeer head cookies with the ivory-colored icing.
- Use a toothpick, Cookie Scraper Boo-Boo Stick, turkey lacer, or scribe tool to pop the air bubbles and to help move the icing to the smaller edges of the cookies.
- While the ivory-colored icing is wet, make a spiral that starts in the center of the reindeer head cookie and work your way out.
- Continue until you get to the ears and antlers.
- Start a new swirl and take it as far as you can and stop.
- Make is to make a swirl for each ear and one for the face.
- You can airbrush the ivory color while the icing is wet or you can wait and let it dry for about an hour.
- If you watched the video, you can see the icing blow a little as the air from the airbrush blows it. I think it looks like a blob.
- Airbrush the edge of the reindeer head cookie and then lightly airbrush the swirls.
Do you know what would be really fun? Add a big red gumball nose to make Rudolph for Christmas. Since I didn’t do it if you make him will you send me a picture or tag me in your photo?
All done!
I hate to run but I need to go shopping and buy some reindeer and plaid so I can come home and eat one of my reindeer head cookies. I think I will eat the gingerbread one.

Hi Brenda,
Isn’t that a fun little cookie cutter! I found it at Fancy Flours. Here is the link: http://www.fancyflours.com/product/Cookie-Cutter-Antlers-Stainless-Steel/Animal-cookie-cutters

You are such a “deer” for sharing your tips and know-how with others. I don’t know what we “wood” do without you. Were you taught how to make such amazing cookies by an “antler” uncle or a Grandmother? (tee-hee)
Oh Lisa, you are just so creative with these reindeer head cookies, I couldn’t wait to see them up close!
