Decorating Sugar Cookies – The Bearfoot Basics
Sometimes I get ahead of myself and don’t do things in order as I should, especially when it comes to sharing things on the blog. I get excited because decorating sugar cookies is really fun so I go straight for the decorating tutorial. There are tips and tricks mixed in the post I share but I want to do more. I want to help empower you in the kitchen so you can make anything you want to make. The problem is, I sometimes assume you already know things like how to make royal icing dry shiny, or how to freeze decorated cookies.
Decorating Sugar Cookies:
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but I do set goals for myself every new year. I feel like resolutions aren’t permeant, but a goal is something you can work for and accomplish. One of my big blog goals this year is to make sure we have covered the basics of decorating by going over things you may or may not already know and adding a few tips that have helped me along the way.
We are going to start a series called “The Bearfoot Basics” which will include videos, a ton of photos and simple instructions that will help you reach your cookie decorating goals. If you already know how to make cookies, I hope you can hang out with us anyway because you might find some tips and trips that you don’t already know or maybe a different way to do things. Don’t worry, there will still be a lot of fun new cookie designs and recipes each week. I just feel like we need to share the basics so we can make sure everyone has the tools for success instead of being frustrated and giving up.
‘The Bearfoot Basics’ will be mixed in with regular post but will have it’s own tab in the navigation bar. There are a few posts and tutorials there already, but we are going to kick it up a notch.
Oh! By the way, did I mention that this is free? I don’t want you to think this is some kind of sales pitch because it isn’t. I want to share information to encourage and help anyone who wants to decorate cookies or make sweet treats. My goal is to inspire, empower and share. It isn’t to charge you for things I want or think you need to know.
So hang on to those piping bags because we are about to take a ride through the great world of cookie decorating! We are going to go over everything from ‘royal icing consistency’ to ‘how to tools’ that will make cookie decorating easier.
Oh yeah, during this ‘The Bearfoot Basics’ series we are not only going to learn a few things about cookies, we are going to cover a few baking, chocolate, fondant, and cakes tips along the way. I hope you are ready!
Bear hugs,
I’m ready, and you’re a very good teacher. Let’s go.
I’m glad you are ready Jane! My hope is to get the entire world to decorate cookies with us. (Insert evil laughter here!)

You know Carol, you just gave me an idea. I will try to show how I lay out the tools as I go. I need to be organized when decorating or I get really distracted. Maybe we can decorate, get organized and learn to sing a new song! Well okay, I won’t sing, but we will do some organizing and decorating! 😉
How wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing!
I can’t wait to get started Judy. Let me know if you have any questions you want answered. If I don’t know the answers, I will find someone who does!
Love love love this! Such a great idea for newbies as well as refresher for us all!
I hope all of us can pitch in and help each other. If we all share our information, imagine what we could learn!

You are such an inspiration and an excellent teacher! I always look forward to your videos. Thank you so much for all your contributions to the cookie baking and decorating world!
In this, my first year of making decorated sugar cookies, I never in a million years imagined them going over as well as they have. I’m excited and eager to continue the learning process, compliments of your amazing skills. Thank you so much, for your generosity!

WOW! thanks for answering!
I live 40 min away from Mexico City, maybe you would like to come visit someday 🙂
I will try! LOL
I’m so excited for this and thank you for doing this. I just dabble a bit and follow a lot of you cookiers on IG and periscope and YouTube to get tips and ideas and knowledge. I love to bake but decorating is hard for me.
Hi Sandy,
I am sad to hear decorating cookies is hard for you. My goal is to make things simple with this Bearfoot Basic series. There are a lot of videos and tutorials coming your way and hopefully we can make decorating easy and fun!
Let me know if there is something specific you want to see. 😉
Yes, Yes, Yes, Super idea!! I love reading, following your posts! But I still need simple cookie designs to try. My lines are still wavy, squirrly at times, and I get cratering alot in my icing, but I keep practicing and I use my booboo stick alot!!! Thank you for all your help Lisa! I love your book too:)
Hi Melanie!
I am glad you are here because we are going to cover wiggly lines, cratering and my favorite tools which include a BooBoo Stick. Let me know if there is anything else you want to see. 😉
