Colored Cookie Dough Easter Cookies
Have you ever had a request to make cookies without icing? Some people love the taste of sugar cookies but aren’t crazy about the taste of royal icing so what are decorators supposed to do? When I get requests like that, I like to make colored cookie dough to add a little fun to the cookies. You can even mix the food gel color in the dough and leave some streaks of color for a marbled effect so your cookies will have a unique look. You can make the cookies without the icing and still have fun by coloring the dough. The possibilities are endless.
Don’t you love the simplicity of colored dough? I’m falling in love with it more and more every day because it’s unique and the possibilities are endless. So what are you waiting for?

Colored Cookie Dough Easter Cookies:
Here is a little video of the bunnies in action for ya.
- Begin by making a batch of sugar cookie dough and divide it into four even discs.
- Cover each disc with plastic wrap until you are ready to mix in the color and roll out the dough.
- Place the first disc onto a plastic mat sprinkled with flour.
- Add a drop of Gold Americolor Soft Paste Food Gel Color and mix. Only add a little color at a time because you can always add more later if you need it but you can’t remove it once it has been added.
- Work the soft food gel paste into the dough until it is well blended or until you get the marble effect you want.
- You can use gloves so your hands won’t be rainbow-colored like mine but I seriously don’t mind looking like a rainbow. It is a sign that I have had fun and put in a good day of hard work so you might want to match me or grab a pair of gloves.
- That is exactly what I am looking for in this dough so be careful and don’t overmix as you add the food-gel color. It will look lovely when it is baked and I wish I would have left more streaks in all the colors because it looks great.
- Cover the dough with plastic wrap and roll it out to 1/4″ because these cute bunnies look great at that size.
- Place the dough in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes so the shapes will be easier to cut.
- I decided to use 3 different sizes of the same cutter shape and it worked well, but feel free to mix things up. Use different shapes or add some eggs or orange carrots so you can make it your own.
- Don’t forget to make a little flower tail for each of the bunnies so they’ll be super cute in the end.
- A small tail was used on the two smaller bunnies so don’t stress over a perfect size.
- A larger flower was used for the large bunny so it will match the size.
- Repeat the process with each of the other colors.
The next time someone asks you for a ‘naked cookie’ remember you can make it fun with colored cookie dough so jump at the oppertunity. The colors and effects are endless so have some fun.

Bear hugs,
Your bunnies are really cute, Lisa. I love the idea of using a flower shape for the tail. 🙂
My oldest twin doesn’t like icing on her birthday cake….I know….what kid doesn’t like MORE sugar? She gets a “naked” cake and her twin brother gets his own cake with loads of icing. So far she has always wanted chocolate cake, but if she ever asks for a vanilla cake I am SO doing this to the batter before I put it in the oven! Their birthday is coming up so keep your fingers crossed! 🙂
Extremely Cute! I love the different size cutters. And the tails make it. I also like the technique of using the mats for chilling and cutting. Thanks for the video. It shows so much!
