How to Make Simple Sheep Cookies with Video
I love animals. As a kid, I constantly looked for some kind of animal to see even if we were in the car. I would look out the window hoping to see some sort of wildlife because that brought me great joy. There were always cows, horses, dogs, and cats no matter what direction we drove, but sometimes I would get excited because I would see sheep. I loved cute little fluffy sheep, but I never got to pet one or feed it grain from my hand. The simple fact that I saw them made me happy and it still makes me happy today! If seeing a sheep can make me happy I wonder how making sheep cookies will make me feel.
Somehow, making the sheep cookies makes me as happy as seeing a live sheep because they’re so sweet. Imagine how sweet sheep sugar cookies are going to be!

- Begin by making a batch of cookie dough and cut out the flower cookies and the gingerbread cookies. Before you bake them, trim the gingerbread cookies below the arms. Use your finger to round off the dough before you bake them.
- Bake according to the recipe directions and let them cool before you begin to decorate.
Who knew a gingerbread man cookie cutter would make a great sheep head!
- Next, make a batch of royal icing and tint some black. Add a few drops of AmeriColor White Food Gel Color to make the white icing looks super white.
- Outline and flood two of the flower petals black and you can decide if the legs touch or if they are separate like in the picture above. I decided to make most of them touch so I didn’t have to worry about sprinkling that little space between them with the white nonpareils.
- Outline and flood the sheep’s head with the black icing and add two candy eyes while the icing is wet.
- Let the royal icing dry completely and that could take up to eight hours or more depending on where you live. It’s important for the black to dry before you add the white icing so it will reduce the chances of the colors bleeding together.
- Next, add some icing onto the cookie where you want to place the sheep’s head because you’ll want to place the head on the sheep before adding the royal icing to the body.
- Add the sheep’s head and gently press it into place.
- Flood the sheep’s body with the white icing.
- While the icing is wet add the candy heart.
- Sprinkle the white icing with the white nonpareils while the icing is wet. You will need to work quickly so the nonpareils will stick to the icing. Once it is dry, they won’t stick.
- Lift the sheep cookies and gently shake off the excess nonpareils, but watch out because those little suckers can really bounce!
- Let the cookies dry completely before you package them.
But wait! We aren’t finished yet because you need to see the sheep cookies video before you go. It won’t take long I promise!

If you want to inspire someone you can make them a platter of sheep cookies with one black sheep and include a note that says, “Dare to be different!” Don’t follow the crowd because you’re amazing and you should choose your own path. You need to go your own way because I know you have the courage to make the world a better place!
The next time you see a field full of sheep, look for the one that stands out and then, make some cookies to inspire someone!
Bear hugs,
Outstanding, Lisa! I love your ideas! Thank you for sharing!

Absolutely adorable! Love your use of the cookie cutter!
Even as an adult I get excited when I see sheep out in a field. We traveled to England and Wales and saw thousands and thousands of them. It was a little fluffy heaven.
A few days ago I even got to hang out with two darling little lambs. They were hand reared and were just the sweetest little things. I cradled them in my arms and they were so content.
Your sheep cookies are adorable. I love the tray with the black sheep and your sweet message about being different. 🙂
Love, love, love these! And I so appreciate you cookie decorators who can repurpose cutters. I was wondering how you did the sheep’s head. Easy, peasy!
Lisa, These sheep are the cutest ever! I love how simple you designed them, and how adorable they are! You are so clever and creative! XO!
Hello Lisa .
These cookies are spectacular. My cookies when dry are a little more opaque. If I use your royal icing recipe I will obtain the same result or after drying have to put something else?
Greetings.
Hi Niurka,
If you want the royal icing to dry with a shine, just place them in front of a fan as soon as you decorate them. The air will help the top layer of the icing crust over quickly and will give it a bit of a shine. That’s all there is to it! 🙂
Lisa, your sheep are adorable! My oldest kiddo LOVES sheep (and goats)…these would be perfect to have at her High School graduation party. Your timing couldn’t have been more perfect!
As a kid, and even today, I am always looking out the windows in search of animals. I’m fortunate to live in an area some would consider “rural”, so I get to watch deer go about their day or sleep “hidden” among the trees, cows and horses meandering in a field, red tailed hawk on the hunt, and listen to owl conversing at night. But on extras lucky days, I get to see red fox, turkey, raccoon, and the occasional opossum.
Thank you for sharing such cute cookies and your clever idea of using the gingerbread man cutter for the sheep’s head. GENIUS!
What cute cute cute little sheep cookies, I am in love!!
OH my goodness just LOVE the sheep! Where my daughter lives every Fall they have a “Trailing of the Sheep” festival these would be so cute to have at something like that.
