How to Make Cute Chicken Cookies with Video
I love chickens. There’s something about a cute little chicken with the red comb on top of its head that makes it irresistible. When I see chickens they remind me of the days that I would gather eggs with my grandma so we could bake something sweet and delicious for the family. I guess these chicken cookies really remind me of the good times I spent at my grandma’s house learning how to bake. She really knew her way around the kitchen and I’m grateful she took the time to teach me a few things.

How to Make Cute Chicken Cookies Video:
I honestly had the hardest time making this video. The sun was up, then it was down and then it was up, then it was down. It seriously drove me crazy and made editing a nightmare, but I think it’s good enough for you to get the idea on how to decorate them.
Chicken Cookie Tutorial:
Bake the cookies:
- Bake a batch of sugar cookie dough and cut out the chicken shapes.
- Let them cool before you decorate them.
Add the Pattern on the Cookies:
- Trace the cookie cutter onto a piece of paper and cut it out.
- Draw the head and wing onto the chicken template and cut them out.
- Place the patterns on the cookie and use the food safe marker to draw the head and wing on the chicken cookies.
Decorate:
- Outline the chicken with the black royal icing.
- Flood the body with the black royal icing and add the white dots while the icing is wet.
- Let it dry for about 20 minutes.
- Flood the head and the wing with the black icing.
- While the icing is wet add a white dot for the eye and then add the 4mm pearl dragee.
- Then add the rest of the white dots.
- Let the cookie dry for about 20 minutes.
- Add the red comb and the red wattle.
- Add the yellow beak.
- Let the cookie dry completely.
For a little variety, follow the same steps for the black and white polka dot chickens but pick the colors you like and don’t add the white dots.
My grandma loved brown eggs and when she gave away her chickens and moved to the city she would drive back to the country just so she could buy brown eggs. I’m not an expert nor will I begin to tell you which egg is better because you need to decide that for yourself. I will however tell you to go make chicken cookies. If you use brown or white eggs your cookies will be delicious!
Bear hugs,
So cute!!! I’m glad you mentioned doing the chickens in other colors–I love the black and white ones but I have an aversion to the black icing. But they are cuter in black and white! Are the speckled eggs cookies too?
I agree. Black doesn’t always taste good since it’s bitter. I usually like to make a few black and white chickens with other colors for eating. I wish the black icing tasted butter.
While we’re wishing, I wish royal icing tasted like buttercream!
I ADORE chickens, too! And Lisa, your cookies are so cute…..looks like I’m “turning the oven on” in spite of our St. Louis heat and humidity! Spock cookies and Chicken cookie it is!! 🙂
I don’t know what I love the most, the cookies or the photos! WOW It’s always such a pleasure to visit your blog!
What technique did you use to make the random speckles on the eggs?
Hi Sara,
I thinned down a little brown icing and used a clean toothbrush to ‘flick’ it onto the eggs. It’s fun but messy! Be warned! hahah
Lovely cookies! I will make these.
🙂
