How to Make Cute Spooky Ghost Cupcakes | The Bearfoot Baker

I’m a sucker for a simple cupcake. Making cupcakes should be fun and anyone should be able to do it without stress or a big old mess. That’s why these ghost cupcakes are among my favorite Halloween cupcakes to make. They are cute, a little spooky, delicious, and extremely fun. And oh yeah, they aren’t messy! It’s kinda like a ghost cleaning up the mess for you. Well, maybe not but, I promise you’ll have fun and won’t spend the day in the kitchen washing the dishes.

Recipes:
Tools:
  • Decorating Tip 1A
  • 2 Brown M&M’s
  • 1 Hershey Kiss
  • Viva Paper Towel
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Begin by tearing off pieces of aluminum foil, squeezing them into a ball shape, and then flatten them so you can place them on the sides of your cupcake papers. This will push the cupcake’s papers in on the sides and make a cute ghost shape once the cupcakes are baked.
  • Each cupcake needs 2 pieces of foil. One placed on each side like in the picture below.

See how to make the ghost cupcake shape? It really is easy once you know how to make the foil to help form the shape before you bake them.

Let’s do this!

      • Also, be careful you don’t overfill the cupcake papers with the cake batter. I like a fat little ghost but let’s try to keep them a good size by filling them about 2/3 of the way full after you’ve added the foil.

      • Can you see the ghost shape yet?
      • Bake your cupcakes according to the recipe directions.

      • Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool to room temperature.

      • Make a batch of Crusting Buttercream Frosting. If you want to make sure your icing is really white you can add a little white food gel color to make sure it’s super white.

      • Place your white icing into a decorating bag that has a #1A tip inserted in the end.
      • Pipe a dot at the end of the ghost and drag the tip through the frosting towards the ghost’s head.
      • Repeat with two more dots. If you can’t imagine what I’m describing, you can see how to do it in the video below.
      • Then pipe a big flat circle for the head.

      • Let the icing sit for a few minutes so the top of the icing can form a crust.
      • Place a Viva paper towel on the ghost and gently press and smooth the icing below. You can feel the icing smooth out.

      • If you are not sure if the icing on the ghost cupcake is flat, lift the paper towel and take a peek. If not, keep smoothing.
Let’s make the face.

  • Now for the fun part where the kiddos will love adding the cute faces to the ghost cupcakes. You can get creative with this and add any kind of candy your heart desires. I chose to keep the ghost cupcakes simple with M&M eyes and a Hershey Kiss mouth.
  • I wanted to add a mustache, bow tie, or flower bow to give them a bit more personality. I didn’t do that because that seemed to take the ‘simple’ out of the ‘simple ghost cupcakes’ so I left them alone even though it was hard to walk away.
