How To Make Decorated Woodland Cookies with Video

Do you see something similar about these woodland cookies? Take a really close look.

They were all made with a star cookie cutter. The cutter was altered a little by trimming the top tip-off of the cookie dough before you bake the cookies. You can round it a little from the two side tips so it will look more like the bottom of the face. Now flip the cutter upside down. Do you see the woodland animals now? I see a bear, fox, raccoon, skunk, and a cat. I didn’t make the cut, but I wonder if that’s why my skunk looks like it could meow.

  • Once you bake the cookies, use a food-safe marker to make the pattern on the cookies. As you can see in the photos, I decided to change the design after I drew the pattern. Don’t you just love food safe markers!
  • Outline and flood the face with the white icing.
  • While the icing is wet, add two black Sixlets for the eyes and one for the nose. If you don’t want to use Sixlets, no problem. Just use black royal icing.
  • Let the cookie dry for several hours.
  • While the cookie is drying make your fox orange color. Mix small amounts of  AmeriColor Electric Orange, Burgundy, and Ivory until you get the orange-ish color you want.
  • Outline and flood the top of the head and let the cookie dry completely.
  • Now watch the video below to see how easy it is to paint the details.

Skunk Woodland Cookies:

  • Once you bake the cookies, use a food-safe marker to make the pattern on the cookies. As you can see, I changed my mind about the skunk after I drew the pattern. Let’s hear it for those food-safe markers again! LOL
  • Outline and flood the face with the white icing.
  • Add two black Sixlets for the eyes and one for the nose. If you don’t want to use Sixlets, no problem, just use black royal icing.
  • Let the cookie dry completely.
  • Outline and flood the top of the head with the black royal icing.
  • Use the black food gel color mixed with a little water to paint the mouth and whiskers. Do skunks have whiskers? I just Googled it and they do, but they’re white. That’s why my skunk looks like a cat. Yikes. You can just pretend I didn’t add the whiskers so yours look more like a skunk. What can I say? Sometimes I’m a stinker! 😉

Raccoon Woodland Cookies:

  • Okay, I know you’ve got the star face down pat by now so grab a cookie and outline and flood it with gray royal icing.
  • Let it dry completely.
  • Add black royal icing to the eye area.
  • While the black royal icing is wet, add 2 candy eyes. You can make them yourself or you can buy them in bakery stores or Wal-Mart. I personally like to make them myself so I have the correct size.
  • Make a black circle for the nose. While the icing is wet, add a white royal icing highlight.
  • Mix a little black food gel color with water and paint a mouth, eyebrows, whiskers, and outline the face. Hey, what’s that skunk doing in the picture? UGH!

Bear Woodland Cookies:

  • Look at the difference in the shape of the bear and the fox, skunk, and raccoon. It’s the same cookie-cutter, but by rounding the outline of the bear head you get an entirely new look. Some of the cookie is showing but I’m fine with that.
  • Outline and flood the face with the brown royal icing.
  • While the icing is wet add a little ivory for the inside of the ears.
  • Let the icing dry for a few hours.
  • Next, make a snout with the ivory royal icing and let it dry a bit before you add the nose.
  • With the black royal icing, pipe a nose and add a white royal icing highlight.
  • Pipe two white eyes and add a dot of black icing for the pupil. Or you can add a 4mm black pearl dragee for the pupils.
  • Let the cookies dry completely.

I decided to use the heat sealer, shrink bags, and a mini heat gun to package the cookies. It makes them look professional and since they are protected from all the dirt and dust in the world, we can place them in cute cookie boxes. What? You don’t have cute cookie boxes?

This is where this tutorial gets really fun!

She contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if we could make some treats for you. I jumped at the chance because her shop is full of super cute things that go great with cookies and will make our cookies look even better than the royal icing does.

She creates fun and whimsical DIY boxes and paper toys and you can download and print them at home. You don’t even have to find the car keys. Could this be any easier? No, because she tells you exactly what you need and how to print so you can make things like these sweet cookie boxes for your cookies.

If you want to use the seals you can print them on a full sheet label and use a crafting hole punch to cut them out. Slide the cookies into the treat bags and use the seal to close them. ADORABLE! She has thought of everything for us. So go follow her and check out her goodies:
