I think the first thing I would make would be the lemon cookies and give to the residents at the retirement community my family owns and manages. Very few of them do any baking any longer. Some aren’t able and if its men on their own, well they usually never did and even now, the women do very little baking any longer despite having beautiful kitchens to use. So…to satisfy that sweet tooth some of them still have (often the men), I bake for them. Sometimes I even try to make treats their mothers used to make for them. If given a workable recipe I’ll try almost any type of baking. I love trying recipes from other countries and cultures. People often say things they shouldn’t about other “cultures” (not quite sure how to classify) which they shouldn’t but the Jewish faith has an enormous amount of absolutely incredible food, especially their baking. I believe food is intertwined in their religious celebrations more than any other than I know about. I know as a Christian there are extremely few foods that have religious meaning or symbols. Sure, each family has their own family traditions of items they make each Christmas or Easter but none are associated with the church, they’re just family favorites. It’s a very different way of looking at food and celebrations and I find it interesting and exciting. I’ve always said that if people were made to sit down and “break bread” with their enemies a few times all conflicts would be over. It’s almost impossible to enjoy a good meal with people and still have nasty feelings about them. It’s a shame we bakers of the world can’t enforce that idea.
I’ve spent far too much time making cookies for others this year. Instead of feeding my littles cookie dough (don’t judge – I lived, so will they!) I’ll let them help me make whatever cookie in the set their heart desires! Secretly, I hope it is the cassette tape, so I can explain the HOURS I spent trying to record a song without a DJ talking. 😉 Thanks so the giveaway! 🙂
