Have you seen it? Maybe you’ve only seen it on tv, but when that sharp gray fin pops up out of the ocean water you know exactly what’s lurking under the surface. A SHARK! It’s probably the single most terrifying thing you can see while swimming. Even if you’re watching tv or a movie, you have to yell at the person who doesn’t see what’s lurking behind them so you can help save them from a shark bite. Well, today we are going to be taking a bite out of a shark fin cookies so the sharks need to watch out for us.

Are you ready for a true story? When I was a teenager my family went to the beach and I decided to swim really far out into the ocean just to see how far I could swim. Did I mention I wasn’t a super-smart teenager?

Anyway, as I was swimming, I saw two guys that decided to swim alongside me. I thought it was funny because it seemed like they wanted to race so I swam faster. I’m not sure why I stopped swimming and turned around, but I didn’t like what I saw. It was the look of fear on their faces. Like “we are going to die” kind of fear. I quickly turned around and saw “the fin!” Yep. The fin wasn’t super close to me, but it was close enough to stop me in my tracks.

I don’t know what happened to snap me out of it, but somehow I started swimming for the shore. I swam as fast as I could and made it back without encountering any ocean life and so did the two guys. As we caught our breath after swimming for our lives we stood up to see if “the fin” was close and my heart pounded as I searched the waves looking for that iconic gray triangle. There it is! The fin that terrified me. The fin that made me realize how crazy it was to swim in the ocean without thinking about what could happen.

As we watched we realized “the fin” didn’t belong to a shark. Nope. It belonged to a hungry dolphin that was looking for food. I was terrified by a school of sweet, cute, and hungry dolphins. Again, I wasn’t a very smart teenager when it came to seeing wildlife. We laughed it off, but the truth is, that single fin was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.

I’m glad that “the fin” belonged to a dolphin and not a shark and I’m glad I have a job where I can make shark fin cookies to share with friends and family. It’s a lot safer than swimming out into the deep blue ocean without a plan.
