How to Make Simple Mitten and Hat Cookies

Today is a beautiful day, but if you go outside you going to need a few accessories to help keep you warm. I stepped out to my car for about three seconds and I felt like I was going to freeze! I like cold weather, but if I’m going to be outside when it’s 25°, I want to feel warm and toasty like I’m curled up in a blanket with fuzzy socks. Then, when I come back inside, I want a few good mitten and hat cookies to help warm me up.

  • Outline the hat with the color of royal icing you want to use. This is Electric Green Soft Paste Food Gel Color by AmeriColor. I like the line green color.

  • Next, use the ball tool to gently press down on the royal icing on the ball and brim of the hat. Gently press without pushing the royal icing over the edge of the cookies. It should be ready to push and make the indents in the icing after about twenty minutes, but this will depend on how long it takes the icing to crust over with your humidity. Some days the icing here is ready in fifteen minutes and other days it will take at least thirty minutes. You can make and use an extra cookie to time it so you will know when it’s ready.

  • Perfect! Now let the royal icing dry completely before you wrap or stack it.

  • If you want a different look for your hat you can make this one with a different brim.
  • Flood the center of the hat with the royal icing color of your choice. The icing is 15-second consistency with AmeriColor Sky Blue Soft Food Gel Color.
  • Let the royal icing dry for about ten minutes before you make the lines on the brim.
  • Next, outline the brim and the ball of the hat with the royal icing.
  • Make a few lines on the brim but don’t let them touch. If they touch, it will look like you flooded it instead of looking like individual piped lines.

  • While the lines dry for a few minutes flood the ball of the hat with the royal icing.
  • Add more lines to the brim as the royal icing lines dry. You want to layer them so it will look like someone knitted it.

  • After the icing on the ball of the hat has had about twenty minutes to dry, gently press the ball tool into the royal icing. Remember, ‘gently’ press it so the icing doesn’t fall over the edge of your cookie.
  • You may need to adjust the time due to your humidity and temperature.
