Hi Lisa, So happy I found myself on this page!!! I'm more into your regulay cookies and mostly in making various types of fudge. However, your comments and suggestions will be so helpful to me!! One question....when mailing cookies/fudge is there a good way of keeping everything 'fresh'? Just really getting going and worried about good quality products. Thanks for the help.

I hope you can plan out your prices Nancy. I love making cookies and don't want to get burned out because it feels like I'm working all the time for free. I hope you get some time to really think about what you need to charge so you can pay for your supplies and have some mad money for yourself! ;)

Thanks so much for this post! I have been baking cookies for years and never seem to charge people other than a little over cost. I love baking and have thought I should make this a little business venture at some point. This and Sweet Sugarbelle pricing chart has really opened my eyes!

In reply to <a href="https://thebearfootbaker.com/tips-on-taking-orders/#comment-27989">Cindy</a>.

Hi Cindy!

Let me start by saying you DESERVE to get paid for the work you do! Let me say it again, YOU DESERVE TO GET PAID!

Now that we have that out of the way, you can totally make "free" cookies anytime you want for whoever you want, but if we make orders for people we don't really know why aren't we charging for them? People don’t go to Wal-Mart or Target and expect to get free products so why do we think they expect to get free cookies from us?

I have made my fair share of “freebies” and I don't anymore. Instead, I use that time to volunteer, play with the grandkids, get my dishes caught up or even take a nap. Don’t get me wrong, I love making people happy with cookies, but if we don’t charge it’s going to suck the fun right out of this wonderful job we have. I don’t know about you but I love making cookies so much that I don’t want to burn out.

Now as far as your first order for your friend, I am sure she has seen your work and she would not have asked you to make cookies if she didn’t trust you and your skills. Don’t feel bad for asking to be paid for your work and time. I’m sure she will be happy to support you (her friend) in your cookie adventure or else she wouldn’t have ask you to make them in the first place.

I know by your comment you’re going to charge her a fair price so don’t be nervous. Be proud. Be confident. Be a cookier who gets paid for her hard work.

I do advise you to make a list of your supplies and figure out how much money you have in each cookie and what you want to be paid. This will help you determine a price so you will be ready and have a price when people ask how much you charge. You have got this! You can do it! You deserve it!

Bear hugs,
Lisa

When I read your post to my husband about deserving the appropriate payment for our efforts, my husband said "I love that woman!" He is tired of seeing me work so many hours and "gifting" or "donating" all the cookies I bake and decorate. I am about to deliver my first "paying" order today to a friend and so stressed about how much to charge so I reread your post. THANK YOU!!!

In reply to <a href="https://thebearfootbaker.com/tips-on-taking-orders/#comment-7178">Vicki</a>.

I am totally using this chart from now on! I too often have wavered on how much to charge. I usually under charge for the exact same reason because I think...people aren't going to pay that much for a silly cookie, right? But they don't understand the many nights in a row staying up late to Jimmy Fallon I've watched while decorating just to keep my head from falling asleep in the icing, all to sometimes ending up only charging around $40 sometimes. I'm so happy I finally have this simple resource to use for pricing. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this.
