How to Make Adorable Chocolate Chip Cookie Decorations

Have you ever made chocolate chip cookie decorations? If not you should because they’re easy, fun, and help make decorating some cookies a breeze! I think we should all make a set of these and put them on a plate (one made out of a cookie of course) and leave them for Santa! That’s just one way these cute little chocolate chip cookie decorations can help you decorate a few cookies.

Oh yeah, Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day! I know everyone is going to enjoy eating a few cookies, but I get just as much joy if not more by making these royal icing decorations. It’s not only fun, but it’s also helpful!

Another great thing about cookie decorations is you can make them ahead of time so they’ll be ready to help you decorate any time in the future. Now, I wouldn’t keep them forever, but the shelf life is really long. So store them in an airtight container away from the sun and make a few any time you have leftover royal icing. It’s a great way to use your royal icing and to stock up for the holiday season.

Royal Icing:
  • Tan- 20-Second Royal Icing Consistency
  • Brown- Thick Royal Icing Consistency

*If you watch the video you’ll see that I used a darker brown royal icing I had used the day before I made these chocolate chip cookie decorations. I wanted to fill the cookies with dots of think royal icing so the cookies would be rounded. I could have mixed thick tan royal icing, but I didn’t want to waste the royal icing I already had so I used it. It worked well! I’ll explain more in the images below.

Tools:
  • Turkey Lacer
  • Wax Paper
  • Foam Board or something you can tape the pattern on. I like foam board because you can cut it to the size you want, it’s light, and it’s easy to store when you’re not using it.

Decorating Tutorial:

  • Begin by printing your chocolate chip cookie patterns. They come in three sizes and I suggest making all three of them. You never know when you going to need a small, medium, or large chocolate chip cookie decoration to finish a project.
  • Once you print the patterns tape it to a piece of foam board and then cover it with wax paper and tape it down.
  • Mix your icing colors and begin decorating.

Decorate the Cookies:

  • Pipe the outline of the cookies with the tan royal icing.
  • Use the thick icing to pipe a few dots inside the outline.

What are those dots for?

  • Flood the chocolate chip cookie with the tan royal icing. Don’t worry about the dots. Pipe over them like they don’t exist and your cookies will look nice and full like a real chocolate chip cookie.
  • After you pipe the tan icing use a turkey lacer or scribe tool to smooth it out.

  • I wanted to show you both brown royal icings for some reason. Well, there they are. I like the lighter color for the chocolate chips and the darker worked well for a base for the tan.
  • Anyway, after you pipe the tan royal icing, add the chocolate chips with the brown icing. Pipe some of the dots nice and full and others just add a few tiny dots.
  • Let them dry completely before you try to remove them from the wax paper.
  • Store them in an airtight container away from the sun so they’ll be ready to use when you need them.

Look at the last image in the photo above. Do you see the first cookie? Look how flat that cookie is. I didn’t use the brown icing in the center before I piped the tan icing.

Now, do you see the last cookie? Look how full that cookie is! Adding those dots before you fill the cookies really makes a difference! I hope you try it.
