Episode #1 Success doesn’t come to you. You go get it!
When I think of Frances Du Toit of Banana Bakery I can’t help but smile. I met her at Cookie Con 2017 and she has left a forever happy place in my heart.
Maybe I should start from the beginning. Every time I go to Cookie Con I make new friends and sometimes, they introduce me to some of their sweet friends. Well, that is how I met Frances Fu Toit and I’m glad I did. My friend Diane from Mama Mayer Bakery brought Barbara Poirrier from Cajun Home Sweets, Amanda Morris from Semi Sweet Confections and Frances Du Toit to breakfast with her.
As my husband and I sat there enjoying ‘cookie company’ I decided to ask everyone how they got started decorating cookies. When Frances spoke, I sat there with my jaw on the floor. She started telling us her story and we all were completely amazed, speechless, and inspired. Even my husband, who doesn’t even eat sugar cookies, was listening to every word Frances had to say.
I won’t tell you any thing else because I think you’ll like it a lot better if you listen to the podcast. You’re gonna learn how nothing could stop Frances from her success. If her story doesn’t inspire you the way it did me I’ll be shocked!
Before we did this interview, I sent Frances a little questionnaire. I asked if she had any advice or tips she’d like to share and here is what she said:
“What works for someone else may not work for you. The best way to learn is to experiment and to practice, practice, practice!”
Franceses never give up attitude is contagious. After listening to this podcast I feel as if I can do anything and achieve success. Hard work, practice, and knowing nothing can stop us is something we all need to practice so we can achieve our dreams. She’s the perfect example.

Be sure to visit Frances at the links below and show her some love. Anyone who takes a 45-minute ferry ride with a backpack and a rolling suit case to purchase baking supplies is definitely my inspiration.
Do you use cookies to inspire people? Are you “baking the world better one cookie at a time?” If so, shoot me an email because I’d love to hear your story.
Bear hugs,
Oh my goodness. What a wonderful and amstory. She certainly has perseverance! Thank you for sharing.❤️❤️❤️ Incredibly fabulous work.
Thanks, Christine! I love France’s story. I keep thinking about her walking around Hong Kong with a backpack and rolling suitcase looking for eggs and powdered sugar, WOW! She’s incredible!
Lisa,
Thank you for this! Frances has definitely given me inspiration. She is right on in that we are “spoiled” here in the States. I’ve seem to have lost inspiration here recently and she has definitely kicked me up a few notches! I look forward to the next Podcast. ??
Hi Melissa,
Every time I think of Frances shopping it makes me smile because she never gave up. She is definitely one of my cookie heroes!
Thanks for listening!
That was very very interesting!!! A huge lesson in perseverance. I loved meeting Frances at CC’17 too. Her cookie style is just soooooo cute!.
I agree with you, Jennifer! Frances is wonderful. Listening to her talk about her baking experience in China really makes me think of how we do things here in the States. I don’t think I’ll ever complain about long lines at the grocery store!
Thanks for listening,
Lisa
What a fantastic story- thank you so much for highlighting Frances and her amazing journey in the baking world! I’ve always marveled at her talent, but now even more so knowing all she had to do along the way. I don’t think I’ll ever complain about my own ingredient supply or oven situation again!
I totally agree with you, Kate! I won’t even complain about traffic or long lines in the grocery store! I’ll just imagine her with her rolling suite case and backpack on a 45-minute ferry ride! 😉
