How to Make Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Oreo’s with Video
Okay. I have a confession. I’m addicted to chocolate and Oreo’s. I had so much fun with the chocolate mummies that I had to make some cute Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Oreo’s. Sometimes I think Halloween treats need to be goofy so these little guys needed to be fun with wonky eyes and cute green noses.
Supplies for Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Oreo’s:
- There are a couple of different ways you can melt the candy melts. You can melt them in the microwave or in a double boiler on the stove. I prefer melting them on the stove because I seem to be in more control. If you like the microwave better just follow the direction on the back of the bag.
- Before you melt the candy melts, place about a tablespoon of shortening in the bowl and melt it completely. This will help it melt without lumps and will help cover the Oreo with a nice shiny smooth later. Don’t try to replace it with butter or margarine because they contain water and will mess up your chocolate.
- Once the oil is melted add the candy melts and melt on the stove or in the microwave. I used the Orange Wilton Candy Melts but they weren’t orange enough for me so I added a few drops of orange food gel color. Gel color works better than the food coloring you buy in the grocery store.
- Fill each Oreo hole a little less than half way with the white chocolate and then pick up the mold and tap it gently on the table to pop any air bubbles.
- Place the Oreo mold in the freezer for about 4-5 minutes.
- Now here is where I learned a little something. I placed the Oreo’s directly on the cold candy melts but, I should have added a little spoonful of the melted chocolate to the top before adding the Oreo’s. The problem is when you press the Oreo’s into the chocolate you have to add a little pressure and the melted candy will come out of the sides. If you add a spoonful of the melted chocolate it will hold the Oreo away from the edge of the mold and push up the sides so there won’t be any air bubbles. You can learn from my mistake. 😉
- Once the Oreo’s are in place add a little melted chocolate to the top and spread it over the Oreo’s.
- Scrape the excess off of the Oreo’s before you place it back in the freezer.
- If you don’t scrape all of the melted chocolate off of the mold then it will make an edge on your final Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Oreo’s. Learn from my mistake again. You can see an edge on mine in the final photos. Yep. I rushed them but I think they’re still cute.
- Freeze them for about 15 minutes.
- Remove them from the freezer and turn the mold upside down. Gently press on the mold and pop them right out.
- Use the melted chocolate as glue to add the stems and eyes to your little chocolate covered pumpkin Oreo’s.
- Time to add the royal icing details. Use the green to add a few vines near the stem.
- Add a mouth with the black royal icing.
- Finish them off with a cute green royal icing dot for the nose.
*TIP: If don’t want to use royal icing you can add the detail with different colors of candy melts. I personally like the royal icing because, well, I work with it almost everyday so I’m comfortable with it. You should use whatever your comfortable with.
