Hedgehog Cookies – With a How to Video
Do you remember the other day when I said you can get Sweet Sugarbelle‘s Scarecrow and “Hedgehog” cookie cutters. What I meant to say was, “Sweet Sugarbelle’s Scarecrow & Sunflower Cookie Cutter,” because I turned the sunflower cookies into hedgehog cookies. Do you see where I got confused? It is a sunflower cookie cutter, but it’s can also be used to make hedgehog cookies.
The sad part about these cookie cutter is they’re really hard to find because they’re exclusively sold in some Michaels Stores. So they are like cookie cutter gold this season. I went to Michaels to pick up a few and they only had two left so I grabbed them. One for me and one to share with one lucky reader. You can enter the contest today! You can make hedgehog cookies even if you don’t have Callye’s sunflower cutter. Her design is super cute but if you can’t get it, your still in luck. Grab any sunflower cookie cutter and follow this tutorial.

Ivory with a tiny bit of Chocolate Brown
A sharp knife to cut the bottom off of the sunflower cookie dough before you bake the cookies.
#2 Decorating Tips
- I used the sunflower cutter from Sweet Sugarbelle’s set because I liked the way she designed the flower petals. They aren’t uniform so it’s perfect for a wonky little hedgehog. But like I said before, if you don’t have one you can still make the cookies with a different sunflower cookie cutter.
- Once you make your cookie dough and cut out the sunflowers, use a sharpe knife to cut the bottom off of the sunflower before you bake the cookies.
- If you like your cookies to be uniform, watch where you cut the bottom off and repeat in the same place for the other cookies. If not, they won’t all have the same shape since the cutter isn’t uniform. All sunflowers and hedgehogs look a little different so don’t worry if they aren’t exactly the same way. I’ve never seen two identical hedgehogs in the wild so I don’t expect to see them the same in cookie form either.
- Bake according to your recipe directions and let them cool completely.
- Outline and flood the cookie with the chocolate brown icing and let it dry completely.
- With the ivory colored icing, make two ears and a body.
- Here is where you have a choice on his little face. You can add the black eyes, nose and mouth while the ivory color is wet, or you can wait for it to dry a little while before you add them.
- If you add the eyes while the ivory is wet then the colors will be flat on the final cookie.
- If you add it when the ivory has had a little time to dry, the black icing will sit on top of the ivory and give your cookie more dimension.
- Use the chocolate brown icing to make the quills. Make a small dot of brown icing and then pull it to the sides of the cookie with the turkey lacer. Watch the video below and you’ll see what I’m talking about. 😉
