3: Inspire & be Inspired Karen Summers
In this episode of the podcast, Karen talks about her first job. I’ll bet you’ll never guess what it was. Yep. A cookie decorator. She actually started making cakes and quickly found a love for decorating cookies.
When I met Karen we had an instant bond and friendship that has continued to grow stronger each year and it all started with a weekend of cookie camp. Now with Cookie Con, Karen and Mike continue making a place where decorators can get together and experiment with supplies, meet new friends, and form friendships that will last a lifetime.
We all know the many talents of Karen like how she can juggle four kids. Decorate cakes and cookies. Organize a huge cookie convention with one hand tied behind her back. And has a million other talents that I’m totally jealous of. But did you know that her husband Mike is a very talented painter? The paintings are breathtaking! You can find Mike Summers Art here. There is a painting of a butterfly that looks so real you’ll think it’s photograph instead of a painting. Not to mention the other incredible works of art. His work is incredible! You really need to see his artwork!

**COMMENTS CLOSED AND WE HAVE A WINNER!**
Lynne Schuyler-These podcasts are so fun!!! It’s great to hear cookiers tell their stories. Living in Idaho, I’m an online shopper by necessity and was completely surprised when I placed an order from Karen’s Cookies and it shipped from 3 hours away. I’m probably the only person sorry CookieCon is moving, but I totally understand the excitement of everyone within driving distance of Indianapolis. It truly is a great experience for anyone interested in decorating cookies.
Congrats Lynne! I’ve sent you an email on what you need to do to claim your ticket!
Bear hugs,
Oh, I wish I could go! Thanks!
Your hot air balloon videos were the first cookie videos I ever watched and I tried several of your cookie recipes when I first started. Not only that, some of my first supplies came from your website! Thank you for your cookie vision, inspiration and for changing lives with your work! I can’t imagine a life without decorating cookies! 🙂
Kristien from Kristien’s Cookies
I would LOVE to visit Cookie Con next year!
I LOVE cookiecon!! And would love even more to win a free ticket 🙂 My birthday is in September and I can’t wait to celebrate it at cookiecon next year! Karen and everyone that works so hard to put inbthe event are AMAZING!
Thank you so much for all the inspiration, advice, tutorials and being a great mentor to a newbie like me!
I would love to attend and met all the cookiers that inspire me daily!
Yes Please! I would love to go, I love seeing everyone’s pictures when they get back:)
Hi Lisa and Karen! I had the pleasure of going to Cookie Con in 2014! It was truly a wonderful experience! The amount of work that must go into putting a convention like that together is just mind blowing and Karen and Mike make the experience very worthwhile!! I wish everyone good luck and I have my fingers crossed that I should get so lucky!! Thank you Lisa and Alan for the very generous offering! <3
I would love to attend. It’s so interesting to see all of the creative ideas everyone has!
After following the blogs of Haniela, Sweet Sugarbelle and you, Lisa, a whole new world of creativity entered my life. When my granddaughter was born, I wanted to have something special that just the two of us could share during her formative years. She is now two and half. We cut out cookies, mix royal icing colors and she has the most fun with “sprinkles” and “sparkles.” What could be more fun? This has lead to donating cookies to charity events, weddings for friends and cookie gifts to lift the spirits of those in need. You and others who share their talents is my inspiration!
I would love the opportunity to attend cookiecon! I have been decorating for about 2 years now and would LOVE to learn new techniques from these amazing artists!
I would LOVE to learn all the tricks that make cookie decorating easier prettier and learn, learn, learn! I just fell in love with cookie decorating! Thank you!
I’m newer to cookie decorating. I started with making truffles which I donate for our charity events at work and I was looking for new ideas and inspiration when I came across cookies. Wow I was hooked and wanted to learn everything. I’ve bought so may books and watched video’s. Cookie decorating is my stress reliever and I love the look on peoples faces when I make cookies for them. I would love to be apart of the next cookie con.
How sweet of you to offer a free ticket! I love CookieCon! Thank you!
This is why I love my cookie tribe – generosity abounds !! Congrats to the lucky winner !!
I want to thank you for this wonderful podcast and for the message behind it. “Foster The Possitivity” is very much needed in the world we now live in especially after destructive hurricanes and vicious wildfires. Most importantly, we need to encourage our community to lovingly except new cookie decorator’s, new vendors , new products and new innovated improvements and old ideas. There is enough love and accomplishment for every one. We must encourage expansion and not suppress it. “Foster the Positivity” are not just words, they should be a way of life. Thank you both for paving the way for the cookie community.
I am a new cookier. I am inspired every day by all the amazing creations that all you cookiers make. I have begun my cookie journey and I love it. I would love to go to CookieCON next year.
I’ve never been to Cookie Con, too intimidated. I’ve recently started taking classes locally & have decided Cookie people are nice & have made attending the next Cookie Con a goal. Thanks for the great inspiration!
I love to make and decorate sugar cookies, and would love to attend Cookie Con! Thanks for the contest! 🙂
That was such a great podcast, Karen’s journey was amazing, and “Yes” I was of the era where jobs were in newspapers as well. Def feeling old! I have not been to CC yet, but hope to one year! You two are so sweet, keeping my fingers crossed tightly!!! 🙂
How exciting is this cookie gathering. This is first time I’ve heard of it.
I’m a cookie rookie that would love to go and see all the masterpieces.
Super awesome. I went to CC my first time last year and it was just amazing! I had the most wonderful time and I hope I can go again next year!
Wow! It would be a dream to go to Cookie Con! Your Podcast has been so inspiring and I wait eagerly every 2 weeks now. I live in Miami where cake decorating is a lot more popular so meeting exclusive cookiers at somewhere like Cookie Con would be amazing.
I would love to attend my first Cookie Con and meet some inspiring cookiers. The thought of 3 days of everything cookie decorating is a dream come true! Thank you for doing this ?
By the time I came around I think they were already in the works of closing the shop, but it was nice to hear the story of how Karen got started and the birth of the AMAZING CookieCon. I can’t wait for the next one!
I started to go to cookie cons 3 years ago.. I have been totally impressed by everything I saw and learned. Every year After every thing is wrapping up we hurry to the cookie room and pack all the left over cookies to take on their final road show. FIrst to the California cake club then on to the Contra Costa Cake and sugar art society, then on to the California Cookie cutter collectors club then finally on October 14th the Contra Costa Cake and sugar art show with a big display of what cookies should really look like.
SO I really need to come in September just so I can learn more, see more, meet more people and of course take those abondoned cookies on their final journey.
Would absolutely LOVE to join you at Cookie Con, and be inspired by so many talented artists!!
Louise xo
Once upon a time there was a cookie maker extraordinaire wannabe! She would watch everything she could to try to become the cookie maker extraordinaire but just always fell short. She did however, this year for her granddaughter’s dance recital, decide that at 6 years old, you probably don’t need 4 bouquets of flowers, but a cookie bouquet might be just the right fit. So I did attempt and my 6 year old granddaughter did in fact love it, but it was very amateurish looking. Please help and pick me to go to Cooke Con!
This will be my first cookie com and I am so excited!!! Sommer’s Cookie Co- Pickerington OH
Oh my goodness, longtime listner, first time caller lol! Just kidding, but I had no idea you had a podcast, and about one of my favorite topics to boot, how cool! I love-love CookieCon and Karen and you (I was there for your keynote) and just everything about this. I haven’t been sure if I could swing it in the new location next year, but if I were to win a ticket that would pretty much negate the added travel expense, I would be over the cookie moon 🙂 Thanks for the chance!
Great podcast! I attended for the first time last year and had a wonderful time. SLC was a nice visit but Indy is SO much easier to get to. Looking forward to CC2018!
I would love to win and attend Cookie Con! Last year, I found out about it too late, so I think I Instagram stalked everyone who attended!!
I’d love to get an opportunity to go to Cookie Con
Am listening with delight to the podcast. Very enlightening. Thanks for sharing. I am hoping to go to CC in ’18
My first year doing cookies and I love it so much. I’m hoping I can make Cookie Con this next year. When I first heard there was even a cookie con, I was sooooo excited lol. Loved hearing your podcast. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks for another great Podcast. I love and appreciate the fact that so many of the fabulous “Cookieologists” want to share their success and skills with the rest of us. Cookie Con sounds like such a wonderful experience – and to get that many cookie minded people all in one place – has got to be incredible as well as overwhelming and mind blowing all at the same time. It’s fun to get to know how everyone started out – just like us! 🙂 Thanks for bringing us all the terrific cookie info.
This would be my first Cookie Con!! Seriously would love to go!
Would love to attend CookieCon in Indianapolis this year!! Love meeting new Cookiers!❤️

You and Mike do an outstanding job with organizing everything. ?
Wow, how very nice of you! Thanks for all of the tutorials, information, and also this chance to throw my name in the hat to go to CookieCon! Thanks again.

I can’t express enough how much I loved the most recent Cookie con which was my first time I totally agree with Karen’s assessment of the wonderful spirit of our cookie community. You are also doing an amazing thing with this podcast Lisa. It’s so great to hear people’s voices talking about their love of cookies. Some friends and I were just talking about driving to the next Cookie con instead of flying and making it a fun road trip. It’s so kind of you to have this giveaway! Can’t wait to see who wins!!

I had never even heard of Cookie Con (how could THAT happen?). I was so excited to see that it had been held in Salt Lake City. My daughter lives in Lehi. Even though it’s going to be in Indianapolis this year, I AM going! Can’t wait for tickets to go on sale, unless I happen to be lucky and win a ticket. Either way, I will be there! Can’t wait!!!

Thank you so much for your blog, tutorials & new podcasts, Lisa! They’re awesome!
Loved your podcast. Gets me excited to make more cookies. I’m kind of the opposite of cookiers starting when kids were little. I just retired after 35 years of teaching. Last year I would come home and read your blog and watch videos. So I started a year ago making cookies to give away.
Found my purpose for retirement. So many thanks for sharing.
So excited about going to my first Cookie Con, when everyone goes back to school.
#cookiesbydimples
