How to Make Simple Airbrushed Acorn Cookies

It’s kind of weird around here today because I’m celebrating fall and making airbrushed acorn cookies and yet there’s snow clinging to the trees outside. The ground is covered in about two inches of the glistening white stuff and it’s gorgeous. I think we all know fall is my favorite season of the year, but this fall with snow-covered fall leaves is pretty amazing, and a little weird.

Time to Decorate!

  • Begin by drawing your pattern on your cute little acorn cookie. Sweet Sugarbelle’s Tan Template Marker is great because the color doesn’t seem to bleed through the royal icing. Sugarbelle is so smart!

  • Once the pattern has been drawn on the cookie outline it with your green royal icing and use a turkey lacer to smooth out any parts that need to be smoothed out.
  • Let the outline dry for about ten minutes so the flood icing doesn’t fall easily off the side once you begin to flood.

  • Guess what? Yep! It’s time to flood that beautiful green acorn!

  • Flood the entire body of the acorn cookie so it’ll be nice and full once we start to airbrush this cute little guy.
  • Once your acorn body is fully flooded let it dry completely. I’ve actually airbrushed cookies when the royal icing is wet and it’s a lot of fun. The royal icing wiggles and does a weird dance as the air from the gun pushes it in all different directions. I said that to suggest you let the icing dry before we begin the airbrushing process.

Let the Airbrushing Begin!

  • Trying to show everyone how to airbrush with photos is a little difficult so I made a video to help you see how it works.
  • Add a little airbrush color to the color cup of the airbrush gun.  You’ll only need a few drops.
  • Gently pull the trigger and spray along the top and one side of the acorn cookie.
  • Once you get some airbrush color on the side and top, pull the gun away from the cookie a little as you spray. Don’t pull it too far away. Pull it away a little so the color on the edges will spread out a little and look like a smooth shadow instead of a sharp edge.

Let’s Finish the Top of The Acorn Cookie!

  • Next, add the stem with the brown royal icing and use the turkey lacer to push it into place.

  • It’s time to add the top of the acorn. Make several Forrest Green royal icing dots all over the cupule, but don’t let the dots touch each other. Pipe several and let them dry for about ten minutes. Then, pipe more and allow them to dry for an additional ten minutes. Keep repeating the process until the entire top is covered in many, many dots.
  • Let the royal icing dry before you add the final touches of the airbrush color.

  • Airbrush the bottom and side of the cupule just like you did the body of the acorn.
  • You can airbrush it with a green or brown airbrush color. I used the green and added two coats so it would look a little darker.

  • Let the airbrush color dry completely.
