How to Make Bunny Paw Candy with Video
In the last few days, I’ve been watching two cute little bunnies outside of my kitchen window. I’ve never seen such playful rabbits in my life! They hop and chase each other all around the yard. Then, they hop under my husband’s truck and sit there like they’re waiting to pounce on whoever walks by the truck. They’re so fast that most of the time I only see a blur of their feet flashing like they’re some kind of Flash Lightning Superhero. After watching them, I had to make bunny paw candy even though I didn’t make them for Easter. I know, I know. I’m late as usual, but this time I totally blame the bunnies! Maybe they worked too hard delivering all those Easter baskets last week and now they’re rejoicing a job well done.
No matter what the date on the calendar says I’m always happy to celebrate any kind of animal candy. I’ve got a little tip for you on how to make some royal icing transfers that might make your life even easier than before. Have you ever made royal icing transfers and then see the colors bleed over time? I know I have. We try to take every precaution to prevent it from happening, but sometimes humidity wins. This tip might help!

Recipes:
FREE Template:
Royal Icing Colors:
- White
- Pink-I added a very small drop of Americolor Super Red to make pink.
Tools:
- Foam Board or other flat surfaces
- Wax Paper
- Painters or Masking Tape
- Double-Sided Tape
- Turkey Lacer
- Decorating Bags, Tipless Bags, or Decorating Bottles
If you use decorating bags or decorating bottles you will also need two couplers and two #2 decorating tips.
- Begin by printing the bunny paw candy template in the size you want. Just click the small or medium template under the “FREE Template” list and print it.
- Next, find a flat surface to tape your template on. I bought some foam board and cut it a little larger than the size of my template.
- Apply the double-sided tape to the foam board or the back of the template. Place it on the foam board.
- Just to be sure the template doesn’t move, use a little painters tape on each corner to make sure it’s secure.
- Cover the template with a piece of wax paper.
- Pull it tight and tape it on the back of the foam board. Try to make sure there aren’t any lines so the bunny paws are flat on the backside.
- Outline the paws with the white royal icing. You can flood and fill them without outlining them but my icing was a little on the thin side so I decided to be safe.
- Next, flood the bunny paw candy with the white royal icing.
- While the icing is wet, add the pink royal icing.
- Here’s where things get interesting. If you look at the paws in the photo above you’ll see the pink icing color has bled onto the white. It didn’t matter if I let the white dry overnight or if I added the pink while the white was dry. They both bleed.
Here’s my tip for you:
- Don’t add the pink icing. I know it’s hard but wait.
- If you add the pink to the bunny paw candy when you’re ready to make the cookies, your bunny paws will be perfect! No bleeding issues here! We’re smarter than the average bag of royal icing!
- Can you tell in the photo above which bunny paw candy is fresh? It’s not the wet on wet. Nor the ones where I added the icing after the white had dried for an hour. The ones that look good are the ones where I waited to add (and will continue to wait) to add the pink icing.
- Just store the white paws without the pink icing and when you’re ready to make your bunny cookies drop the transfers onto the cookie and then add the pink icing.
- Your bunny paws won’t look like the blur of the bunnies I’ve been watching the past few days. Yours will be nice and clear without any color bleeding.
- Now before you ask, I’m going to let you know how long to store them.
- First of all, make sure they are really dry before you store them. You may want to leave them out for several days before you place them in an airtight container away from the sun.
- They’ll last a really long time like forever! Not really but I’ve used mine up to a year later and they were still good and fresh. Just smell them taste them before you add them to your cookies.
Now you’ll have perfect paws for all of your bunny cookies. You can also make different colors like gray, black, or brown. Bunny bottoms would be a good addition to a woodland cookie set.
You can also use these for other cookies. They are the perfect size for an animal nose, big eyes, bear ears, and many different other things. So mix some different colors of icing and make yourself some royal icing candy decorations. I can’t wait to see what you do with these!
Bear hugs,
CUTE!!!! I’m thinking of adding bunny butts to my daughters baby shower woodland set. Thanks for the great idea and tips! You’re just too awesome! Some”bunny” luvs your blog! More than any other!!???
Can you use candy melts? Or cookie icing to make paws ? Or already made royal icing ?Â
Hi Natalie,
I’m sure you can use candy melts. I haven’t tried it but it sounds like it would work and be fun. If you try it let us know.
I’m not sure what you mean by cookie icing or already made royal icing. Can you give me more information and I’ll try to help.

Wondering if you made any bunny ears?
I am going to try and use these bunny feet on my cocoa bombs!!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Could I use white chocolate instead of royal icing? I’m gonna give it a try! Since I have it on hand…
Sure you could white chocolate, Suzanne! Send me a picture! 😉
I made these today will add the pink once they are dry. I was really nervous about royal icing but all went well. Thank you for the awesome recipe. I am making bunny butt cupcakes and refuse to pay for pre-made. Thanks again.
You’re welcome, Robin! I hope you have fun making the cupcakes. I’d love to see a photo when you make them!
Ok
Hi! These are so cute. I make bunny butt dipped Oreos, but the Wilton bunny feet are hard to come by.Â
I was wondering if you have a recipe for your royal icing. I’ve only ever used buttercream and I don’t want to mess up the consistency.Â
Thank you!Â
Hi Lori,
I love Oreos and what a great idea! Here is a link to my half a batch of royal icing. I think it will work well for your bunny feet: https://thebearfootbaker.com/2013/03/half-a-batch-of-royal-icing-recipe/
LOVE THE BUNNY FEET
Can you put these on buttercream frosting on cupcakes?
Hi Michelle,
You can add royal icing transfers to buttercream frosting but you need to do it just before serving them. The moisture in the buttercream will cause the transfers to melt. I add them seconds before handing someone a cupcake with buttercream.
I suggest you make a batch and practice to see how long it will take for them to start melting. 🙂
