Ballerina bear cookies have been on my mind for a while but I’m glad I waited before I made them because Sweet Sugarbelle’s Nesting Flower Cookies make this project super simple. Ever since I saw her Bowing Ballerina  Cookies I’ve had the idea to make them Bearfoot Baker style with a bear instead of a cute little girl. Callye was actually inspired by Angelina Ballerina to make her cute little dancer cookies so I thought I would keep the inspiration going and make my favorite animal, the bear.

I really enjoyed making these butterfly cookies. They were a lot of fun and butterflies are beautiful by nature so, butterfly cookies have no choice but to be beautiful also. I really wanted to do something different in this set. I thought a few flying butterfly cookies would do the trick. It is very simple and I will show you how.

I normally don’t airbrush and paint on the same cookie but, for these butterflies, it turned out exactly the way I wanted. The bottom of the wings shows a little of the yellow airbrush color. That is hard to do without airbrushing and I think it really makes the wings look realistic. And it only takes a few seconds. Then, adding the details with a paintbrush really makes this cookie pop.

One thing I love about being is cookie decorator is creating cookies for Christmas. When I make Christmas cookies I feel like I am in Santa’s workshop. There are hundreds of cookies bakes and waiting for icing while Christmas music plays in the background. My house smells like gingerbread. All that is missing are a few elves. Do what do I do about that little problem? I make baby elf cookies of course.

I have this friend named Jennifer and we have never met in person. We met online and hopefully, we will see each other in person one day since our states touch each other. I am in Tennessee and she is in Virginia. Well, Jennifer just had a baby! A sweet baby girl! I wanted to send her some love and was trying to think of something cool. Then, my other friends Mike from Semi-Sweet and Hani from Haniela’s sent me an email asking if I wanted to join their virtual baby shower for Jennifer. YES!! I want to join! Sign me up.

It’s perfect! I was so excited! I was ready to make some baby cookies. As I continued to read the email I noticed the theme was “Baby Geek” and then it happened. I froze and I couldn’t think of anything. Have you ever felt frozen like an icicle and lost all feeling in your legs? Once I was able to move my legs again, I walked around the house for days muttering, “Baby Geek Cookies…”, “Baby Geek Cookies…”, “Baby Geek Cookies…”. What was I going to do?

I think the person who designed the swimsuit should start making cookies. I think they would make some awesome cookies!

Supplies for Ruffled Butterfly Cookies:

Orange Thick Icing (AmeriColor Orange Gel)
Pink Thick Icing (AmeriColor Gels-One tiny part Burgundy and equal pats of Deep Pink and Red)
2 – 102 Tips

Let’s talk about icing first. You want your icing to be thick enough to hold the ruffle. I use this Royal Icing Recipe and added a about a tablespoon less water than the recipe called for. When I took it out of the mixing bowl to make my colors, I didn’t water it down much at all. It is stiff enough to hold it’s shape and that is what you need to make a good ruffle.

Now, begin by making the center of the butterfly cookies with the color you want. I did some with the orange and some with the pink. Hold the bag so the skinny end of the 102 tip is up and the fat side is close to your cookie.

As you squeeze, the pressure you apply and the speed you move your piping bag will determine how the ruffles look. You might want to practice on parchment paper until you get the look you want. Pipe the butterfly body and let it dry for about 20  minutes.

Next, outline one wing with the opposite color icing.

Then, fill the wing with more ruffles.

Repeat the ruffles on the other wing.

How simple is that? I made a platter full of these in 15 minutes. I will make these again as soon as I possibly can. They were fun and I didn’t stress over perfect lines and smooth icing. Also, I have a new place for inspiration, the kids clothing department is full of cookie ideas!
