Easter Egg Cookies You Need to Make Right Now

Sometimes cookie tutorials aren’t the easiest things in the world to name. Decorating the cookies is a very natural thing for me, but the name? It has to work so I decided to name this one Easter Egg Cookies You Need to Make Right Now. Please don’t drop everything and make them right this second. Just keep in mind I thought I might get a little attention in the ‘right now’ so please let me know if it worked! LOL

Recipes:

Cookie Cutter: 

  • Any Egg Cookie Cutter will work for these simple egg sugar cookies because no matter what cutter you use, it’s an egg shape.

Royal Icing Colors:
(15-Second Icing in tipless decorating bags)

  • Any food gel color you’d like to make your eggs.
  • White- I use AmeriColor Bright White
  • Sky Blue– The blue on these Easter eggs was made with a is a small amount of AmeriColor Sky Blue.
  • Outrageously Orange– The Cookie Countess
  • Thick Brown- The Cookie Countess Woodland Brown and Totally Brown– a small touch of Woodland Brown was added to the Totally Brown to make a beautiful wreath color. You need the icing to be thick so when you pipe the wreath it will look like the branches of a wreath instead of a wonky circle.

Tools:

  • 1.5 PME Decorating Tip–  or you can use a #1 or #2 tip
  • Apple Blossom Royal Icing Flower
  • Turkey Lacer
  • Tipless decorating bags from Truly Mad Plastic, Flour Box Bakery, or The Cookie Countess 
  • Vodka with a small amount of white and black food-gel color.
  • New Toothbrush-You all know how I’m loving splattering my cookies right now and one great tool to achieve this effect is a new toothbrush. The bristles are stiff and when you pull your thumb across them it makes a great splatter on your cookies. It will also splatter anything and everything in that area so be sure to protect your surface with parchment paper. You can also use a paintbrush that has stiffer bristles because you want it to flick the food-gel color in dots on your cookies. I like the paintbrush better because I get an even splatter.

  • Begin by baking your cookies and letting them cool completely so when you’re ready to add the royal icing it won’t melt off the side of the cookie. That would be sad.
  • Mix your royal icing colors and feel free to make all the colors that make you happy.
  • Be sure to make with royal icing because that is the color that will be at the top of each cookie. If you make multiple colors the white will help be a common color to help pull the platter together.

Time to Decorate:

  • You may need to draw a straight diagonal line so you’ll know where you want to pipe the white royal icing and the colored royal icing. Once you do that you’ll be ready for the Easter Egg Cookies You Need to Make Right Now! Let’s do this.
  • Outline the blue part of the egg and flood it. Let it dry completely.

  • Next, outline and flood the top of the egg cookie with the white royal icing and let it dry completely.
  • I’ve been playing with my food dehydrator and I’ll share some info on that soon. As of right now, I’m loving it because it helps your royal icing dry pretty quick so you can move on to the next step. Since I live in a humid place, we’ll do some experiments to see how it works with humidity. I’ll update you when I have more information.

  • Once the royal icing on your egg cookies has completely dried it’s time to splatter some color on these cute little cookies.
  • To splatter them mix a little white food-gel color with a little vodka
  • Repeat with the black food gel color.
  • This next part is something I struggle with. Put on a food-safe glove to protect your gorgeous hands.  I hope you’re proud of me because I did it this time. I have a glove! YEAH!
  • Dip you brand new toothbrush into the black food-gel vodka mixture.
  • Hold the toothbrush over the cookie and pull your finger over the bristles. Look at that splatter! I love it and I hope you do as well.
  • Let the food-gel color and vodka mixture dry for a little while so you don’t smear it on your cookie. I think I let mine dry for about thirty minutes and it worked well.

  • It’s time to pipe the wreath with a PME 1.5 Decorating Tip. I usually use a tipless bag, but I wanted to make sure my brown royal icing was thick so it wouldn’t fall flat and look like a messy circle and this tip helped me. If you want to use a tipless bag, go for it.
  • Pipe a wonky line on the inside edge of the egg. Circle the egg three times and if you need more add one at a time to see how you like it.
  • Also, start and stop your wreath lines in the place you’re going to add your flowers so it doesn’t look broken when it’s done.

  • While the wreath is still wet, add the flower and look at your pretty Easter Egg cookie.

I hope you like this simple cookie design. It may not be the main cookie in your platter, but it’s great to add to any spring or summer cookie set. I hope you enjoyed decorating with me because I had fun thinking of you as I made these.
