How to Make Fun Santa Cookies

So I learned a lot from this fun Santa cookie. I learned some times you need to quit while the quitting is good as you’ll see as I decorate him. I like the final cookie except for the part that drove me crazy as I decorated dear jolly old Santa.

Let’s Decorate Santa Cookies:

  • Begin by drawing your pattern on your cookie with a food-safe marker. Simply follow the shape of your cookie. You can see how I did that in the video.
  • Next, outline the face with the flesh-colored royal icing, the hat with the red royal icing, and add a little black to the mouth area and use a paintbrush to paint it so it will look like his mouth is open.
  • Flood the hat with the red and the face with the flesh royal icing.
  • Let it dry until the top layer crusts over before you outline and flood the fur on Santa’s hat.
  • Outline the beard.
Time to Add the Beard:

  • Flood the beard with the white royal icing and use a turkey lacer to push the icing in place and to pop the air bubbles.
Where are Santa’s Eyes?

Here is where things start to go a little sideways for me. I wanted to paint Santa’s cheeks and add some shading to make him look a little more interesting. Let’s see where I went wrong.

  • Mix a little food gel color with a little water and paint half-circles for the cheeks.
  • Add two drops of black for the eyes and add the flesh color for the bottom lip.
  • Thin some ivory food gel color with water. Paint the edges of the face and the bottom lip. Rise off the brush with water and paint over the ivory line to blend it into the flesh color.

As you watch the video notice how I washed off the cheeks. Oops!

Let’s Try This Again!

  • Grab some red and pink and mix them together and paint the cheeks again.
  • Rinse the brush off and remove some of the colors under the cheeks.
  • Outline and flood the mustache and the hat to make them stand out a bit.
  • Add a little white food gel color to highlight them.
  • Add some lines and dots for the mustache and beard for details.
  • Use the outline white royal icing to pipe wavy lines on the ball of the hat.
Did I stop there with the cheeks? Nope!

  • I mixed a little flesh-colored icing and then painted over them and it was a real mess. What was I thinking? I have no idea.
  • So when all else failed, I grabbed the ivory royal icing and puffed up his cheeks. I should have painted them with the ivory food gel color when they dried, but by this point, I decided to quit while the quitting was good.

So what’s the point of this Christmas story. Sometimes you need to know when to stop. I sometimes have an issue with that so I always have a practice cookie in each batch. I make one cookie to figure out what I’m doing and how I want my final cookies to look when I finish decorating. This time, I thought I’d share my weird process with you. I hope it helps!

Merry Christmas,

Lisa
