How to Make Spooky Ghost Cupcakes with Video
I’m a sucker for a simple cupcake. Making cupcakes should be fun and and anyone should be able to do it without stress or a big old mess. That’s why these ghost cupcakes are among my favorite Halloween cupcakes to make. They are cute, a little spooky, delicious, and extremely fun. And oh yeah, they aren’t messy! It’s kinda like a ghost cleaned up the mess for you. Well, maybe not but, I promise you’ll have fun and won’t spend the day in the kitchen washing the dishes.Â

Recipes:
Cupcakes-Any kind you feel like making!
Crusting Buttercream Frosting
Tools:
Decorating Tip 1A
2Â Brown M&m’s
1 Hershey Kiss
Viva Paper Towel
Aluminum Foil
- Begin by tearing off pieces of aluminum foil, squeezing it into a ball shape, and then flatten them so you can place them on the sides of your cupcakes papers. This will push the cupcakes papers in on the sides and make a cute ghost shape once the cupcakes are baked.
- Each cupcake needs 2 pieces of foil. One placed on each side like in the picture below.
- Also, be careful you don’t over fill the cupcake papers with the cake batter. I like a fat little ghost but let’s try to keep them a good size by filling them about 2/3 of the way full after you’ve added the foil.
- Can you see the ghost shape yet?
- Bake your cupcakes according to the recipe directions.
- Remove the cupcakes from oven and let them cool to room temperature.
- Make a batch of Crusting Buttercream Frosting. If you want to make sure your icing is really white you can add a little white food gel color to make sure it’s super white.
- Place your white icing into a decorating bag that has a #1A tip inserted in the end.
- Pipe a dot at the end of the ghost and drag the tip through the frosting towards the ghost’s head.
- Repeat with two more dots. If you can’t imagine what I’m describing, you can see how to do it in the video below.
- Then pipe a big flat circle for the head.
- Let the icing sit for a few minutes so the top of the icing can form a crust.
- Place a Viva paper towel on the ghost and gently press and smooth the icing below. You can feel the icing smooth out.
- If you  not sure if the icing on the ghost cupcake is flat, lift the paper towel and take a peek. If not, keep smoothing.
Now for the fun part the kiddos love, adding the face. You can get creative with this and add any kind of candy your heart desires. Me, I chose to keep the ghost cupcakes simple. M&M eyes and a Hershey Kiss mouth. But I really want to add a mustache, bow tie or flower bow to give them a bit more personality. I didn’t do that because that seemed to take the ‘simple’ out of the ‘simple ghost cupcakes’ so I left them alone even though it was hard to walk away.

See how to make the ghost cupcake shape? It really is easy once you know how to make the foil help form the shape before you bake them.

Bear hugs,
Your little ghost cupcakes are definitely too cute to spook and I love that they are squished in the middle!
I love a good Halloween-ish treat….and I love that these are different and unique! You rock, Lisa!!! 🙂
When I read that the icing had to be smooth and that you were using a Viva towel to level the icing without leaving any marks, I literally yelled at you (the computer screen really..) that we can “iron” the ghosts using your trick to make sure cookies come out of the oven flat and not puffy. Just gently iron on top of the Viva towel. I’m in heaven!!!! (it’s my favorite tip you know…)
Do you think using those foil liners and smooshing them in on the sides would work. I wonder if they would hold the hour glass shape once filled? I don’t have any on hand,…I never knew why someone would want foil cupcake liners when there are so many pretty patterns and colors to choose from. Do you know if the foil liners need to be sprayed before filling? Hmmmmmm…………
Hi Janis!
I haven’t used the foil lines in a really long time. I like the grease free cupcake lines because the cake batter stays inside the cupcakes and it doesn’t leak and leave grease spots. I wish I knew more about the foil liners so I could help you. If you try them, let us know how they turn out. 😉
