Happy Camper Cookies That Will Make You Smile

Happy camper cookies that will make you smile seemed to be the perfect title for this post. My family and I used to go camping all summer long. Once school was out we would go to the lake and set up the camper and have a blast! I didn’t want to stay in a tent because things can crawl inside with you. You know, uninvited things like a snake or a bear. No thank you! My favorite part of a camper is the doors. And the sound of things that flush. Flushing sounds way better than things that rattle and growl.

So you see, happy camper cookies will make us smile while we know we are safe! No creepy crawlers here because we have doors!  Now let’s see how to make them.

The camper cutter is called Trailer 03 Cookie Cutter at Truly Mad Plastics and I have to say, I want to buy more. I love the look and the decorating possibilities are endless. When you plan your design think of all the ways you can decorate them. Christmas, birthdays, Father’s Day, summer, fall, and just about anyway you can imagine.

Let’s start a “Camper Day” celebration.  We can decorate them, eat S’Mores, and ride bikes. That sounds like a good plan to me!

  •  Trace the trailer cookie cutter onto a sheet of paper and sketch out your design.
  • Cut out the pattern and then cut out the shapes. Don’t cut the shapes all the way out, just cut them out enough to trace them onto the cookie. Look at the door and tire, they’ve been cut just enough to fold them out of the way and trace the shapes. Use a food-safe marker to draw the design on the cookies.

  • Once the cookies have the pattern on them, outline and flood the cookie with the seafoam green royal icing.
  • Let it dry completely.
Time to airbrush!

  • Next, airbrush the edge of the seafoam green royal icing. You can watch the video to see this in action.
Every camper needs a little pink and a few flowers:

  • Outline and flood the camper trailer with the pink royal icing.
  • Next, outline the tire with the black royal icing.
  • Flood a thick edge with the black and fill in the center of the tire with the gray icing.
  • A long time ago I made a suggestion that you make a bunch of dots (royal icing circles) with your leftover icing. If you do that, you’ll have colorful candy to use on your cookies. So grab a white candy circle and add it to the middle of the tire.
  • Flood the door with the gray icing.
  • Add a small pink dot to the door so it will look like a doorknob.
  • Let the cookies dry.

If you didn’t make the royal icing dots ahead of time, just pipe some icing for the center of the tire and the doorknob.

Time to put it together!

Now it’s time to hang the lights. Camping isn’t as much fun if there aren’t cute lights to set the evening mood. Let’s face it, lights are what makes happy camper cookies so happy.

  • Pipe a thin black line for the lights to hang from the top of the camper. I didn’t trust myself to pipe the line without some kind of map or idea of where the line needed to be piped. If you place the lights (the white circles) on the camper where you want them they’ll light your way and make the piping easy. Just follow the lights for the perfect line. If you take a closer look you will see that I’ve pushed the white circles down a little so I could pipe the line where it needed to go. Once the line dries, use a small dot of royal icing to glue the lights in place. That is what will make your lights look like an actual string of lights.
  • Once you’ve piped the line for the lights, let’s think about making it pretty. Adding a fondant flower to each side will dress it up and add a little personality. Just add two ribbon tails at the end of the light in and place the flowers on while the icing is wet.

  • Next, pipe the fender with the seafoam green royal icing. Airbrush it so it will match the rest of the camper. If you watch the video below, you can see what wet royal icing does when it’s airbrushed. It makes me laugh!

Did you see the royal icing on the camper fender jiggle? Hehehe

Let’s make a list. We need the stuff to make S’mores, a string of lights, and the trailer 03 cutter from Truly Mad Plastics and we will be ready to go on a camping trip that we’ll remember for a lifetime. Oh yeah, don’t forget the doorknob so no creepy crawlers wake us up in the middle of the night.

Bear hugs,
