Happy Mother’s Day Cookies Your Kids Can Make Any Time of the Year

Happy Mother’s Day Cookies are super fun to paint and I think your kids or grandkids will have a blast painting them. The best part is you don’t have to make several different colors of royal icing. Just give them some food gel colors with a little water or vodka (if you’re brave) and watch them create amazing cookies that will make everyone happy!

Let’s get started!

Recipes:
Cookie Cutters:
  • Rectangle Cookie Cutter from my Gingerbread House Cookie Set- Almost any shape cookie cutter will work for this cookie. Have fun with it and be sure to tag me in your Instagram and Facebook photos.
Royal Icing Colors:
  • White- I used an outline and flood consistency, but you can use a 15-second Icing to outline and flood.
  • Use any food gel colors you want to paint your Happy Mother’s Day Cookie Card. I know the more colors I offer my grandkids the more they love decorating.

Vodka- Mix a little with your food gel colors and paint. I used The Cookie Countess Food Gel Colors and I love them. If you don’t want to place vodka on the table with your kiddos I totally get it and you can use water instead. That is exactly what I would do.

Tools:
  • Tipless Decorating Bags
  • Turkey Lacer
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper towels- They are great for dabbing your paintbrush before you touch it to the cookies. Since the surface of the cookie is covered in royal icing you want to be careful how much moisture you add. Touching the brush with the paper towels will help you create a beautiful cookie without the water or vodka creating holes in the surface.

Let’s add some royal icing.

  • Pick out a cookie cutter you like and make your cookies. You can use any kind of cookie-cutter for this. A small rectangle, a heart, a plaque, or any type of cookie cutter. Look through your shapes and pick something fun or let the kiddos tell you what shape they want.
Time to outline and flood:

  • Outline your cookie with white royal icing.

  • Next, flood the cookie with the white royal icing. I used two different consistency with these, but if you use a 15-Second Consistency that would work well. The only reason I used two is that I was working on another set and didn’t want to mix more. You know how that is, right?

  • Let the cookie dry completely in front of a fan. Drying cookies in front of a fan will help them dry with a nice shine.

  • I like to use a paint palette for y gel colors, but a plate will also work. I also add some vodka so it will help make the gel color kind of like a watercolor. Just add a little bit of vodka and a little bit of food gel color.
  • This is where the paper towels come into play. Once you dip your brush into the gel colors with water or vodka, you need to touch the brush to the paper towel to absorb some of the moisture. Just a quick touch is all that is needed. Remember, you don’t want standing water on your cookies because it will break down the dry royal icing. When you paint remember less moisture is more.

  • Paint your picture any way you want. This picture was inspired by my granddaughter Brooke. When we were talking about cookies we both came up with the idea to make a painted cookie card for moms on Mother’s Day. Brooke drew the idea she had on a piece of paper and I tried my best to paint a picture that looked as amazing as Brooke’s picture. I tried hard to make her proud!

Happy Mother’s Day! The next time your kids or grandkids want to make some cookies you should try letting them paint with some food gel colors. It’s fun and you’ll be amazed at the creations they paint.

Bear hugs,
