How to Distress Sugar Cookies for an Aged Look
Earlier this week I showed you How to Make Fun and Fabulous Flag Cookies with the neat cutters Tracy and I worked on a few weeks ago. I had an idea and wanted to make a simple, but unique cookie platter that would look like a flag for the 4th of July. When I explained what I wanted we began talking about the how, when, and wheres of how to make it work. Well, the cutters are made and I couldn’t be happier with them. I made a simple flag that you can see here, but today I decided I want to show you how to distress sugar cookies to get an aged look. It is a perfect way to make a rustic flag cookie platter.
I love vintage things and when I distress sugar cookies it makes me really happy!

Flag Cookie Cutters here and here.
Turkey Lacer
Cocoa Powder
Brush for Adding the Cocoa Powder
Airbrush Gun and Brown Airbrush Color
To make these cookies you need to start with sugar cookies that have been outlined, flooded, and dried completely.
Once the cookies are ready, use something with a “needle-like” tip to scratch the top of the cookie. I used a turkey lacer and started scratching the cookie surface and it took several minutes to get all of the cookies ready. It was fun making the designs but it wasn’t a fast process.
Once the cracks are etched it is time to distress the sugar cookies. It is simple and all you need is a little cocoa powder and a brush so you can apply it to the cookies.
See the difference in the distressed cookies?
Once you have added all of the cracks, it is time to add the airbrushing. Here’s a little video to show you how to do that. Line the cookies up and airbrush them in one smooth motion. You will see how in the video and I think you are going to like it.
I hope you are ready for the 4th of July. I am pinning cookie and cake ideas so if you want to see the cute things I find on Pinterest, follow my cookie board and Independence board for some really fun and cute ideas.
Bear hugs,
Great idea! Cute video!
oh my word…….how amazing and creative are you 🙂 LOVE IT….love distressed things, but never thought of distressing a cookie. Love the flag from previous post and now you distressed them this is definitely something I have to do. As always you continue to surprise me with the things you come up with. Thank you.
What size cookie cutter did you use to make this wonderful platter?
Hi Laurie,
For this project I used the 2 3/4″ star cookie cutter and the 2 1/2″ wave cutter. I think it would look great with any size cutter Whisked Away Cutters offers. Have fun making them! 😉
is that a special airbrush gun? What is the “brown color” you put in? Is it a type of liquid frosting? Where can that be found? I’m sorry I’m asking a lot of questions but none of that was specified and it kind of seems like its the focal point of these cookies. thanks!
Hi Sarah,
I have added the links in the post about the airbrush gun I use and the brown airbrush color. The airbrush gun can be purchased at Michael’s Craft store or you can buy one online. There are also a lot of different types of edible airbrush colors such as AmeriMist, Chef Alan Tetreault, and Kopykake has Kroma Kolors. There are many different ones on the market. The one used in this post is warm brown by AmeriMist.
