Kopykake Video Tutorial
I wanted to make a Kopykake video tutorial for you because I bought my KopyKake projector in 2010 and I didn’t know what to expect. It projects the image down which is great for cookie decorating. I had one a long time ago that projected things onto a wall so I was excited to try one designed for cakes and cookies. From the moment I turned it on, I was hooked.
I don’t use it often. As a matter of fact, every cookie on my blog except these was made without a Kopykake. I could have found a way to make these but, why? It is so much easier and faster to do it with one.

I have heard people say bad things about Kopykakes like it is cheating or something but, I don’t look at it that way. I look at it as a tool. It is much easier and faster for some designs and the results speak for itself. I hope this Kopykake video tutorial will answer all your questions and you will see, I am doing the work. The machine is just a guide.
If you are new here you need to know I name everything. My KitchenAid Mixer is named Arnold after the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger because he beats everything.
Well, want to guess what the name of my Kopykake is? Really? No guesses? Her name is “Dawn.” When the room is dark, she is that weak glow of sunlight just before the sunrise. She doesn’t blind me, she just gives me enough light to see the design on my cookie. I know I am weird and I am glad my hubby loves me anyway.

If you want to purchase a Kopykake, you can get one here or here.
If you don’t have a Kopykake, don’t worry! Klickitat Street shows an app for an iPhone or an IPad that lets you draw on cookies. It is brilliant and you can find it here.
Bear hugs,
You and *Dawn* did a great little video together! I remember these Seuss Alphabet cookies. They are fabulous and that was a BIG decorating job.
Thank you for the mention Lisa 🙂
You are so welcome for the mention Paula! I love the Winnie the Pooh Cookies.
Great video! No way is using this tool “cheating”…I have one and I think there is a definite learning curve when trying to use it. You have to learn how to “keep out of your own way” and not cover up the image with your shadow. You did a great job showing the basics and these cookies are ADORABLE!! TFS!
I totally agree with you Terri! It is not cheating! You are still doing all the work it just helps you outline faster and makes the cookie design very uniform. Great for logos or character cookies.
Hahaha “Keeping out of your own” way is the hardest thing about using it.
Awesome video, Lisa! 🙂
Thanks Jennifer! I am still drooling over your orange bread recipe! I need to go to the store so I can make it.
Great tutorial Lisa. I have not yet bonded with my KK but I am seeing more tutorials on it and I think I am ready to give it another try. Thanks so much.
Hi Ashley, I recommend you name it, hug it and USE IT!! Then you will LOVE it! LOL Let me know what you name it!
Ohhhh I so need one of them. I agree, its not cheating. No more than using an electric or gas oven vs a wood burning one. Thanks for tutorial. You have the steadiest hands EVER! 🙂
I don’t have a KK and I want one more and more! Maybe the Easter Bunny will bring me one…
Do you have to use your Kopykake in a dark room? I purchased the 300XK for myself for Christmas. However, when I took it out of the box and assembled it and tried to use it – I really couldn’t see the image at all in my kitchen. I am going to try to use it again this weekend – but this time, I am going to try using it in my dining room with the shades closed. I sure wish I would have purchased the model with two light bulbs. 🙁
Hi Sherrie,
You don’t have to use it in the dark but, in my experience, the darker the better. I usually save my KK decorating for nighttime use:)
IT WORKS! I tried using my Kopykake in my dining room last night and that did the trick. Thank you!
Your hand is super steady! Love this!
I just saw this post pinned to Pinterest but find it so funny because I did a set of Dr. Seuss letters and was dying for inspiration and couldn’t find any!! This is how my set turned out – http://www.flickr.com/photos/alivmay/11109234414/ – and funny thing is, my letters are somewhat similar! Did you ever post pics of your full set of these? Love your work!!
Hi Alison! I did this set to show how to use a KopyKake projector. I never did a post on how to make the cookis. I just looked at your set and they are amazing!!!!
Thank you! I’ve only been baking for about a year and I’ve definitely used your tutorials before! Thanks for helping all us new cookiers out!
I’ve been wanting one sooooo bad! Hubby said for my bday , which is April, and I don’t think I should HAVE to wait that long! It’s like torture!
How can it be cheating? Lol … Now, if it iced and decorated the cookies for us, then maybe, but we’re doing ALL the work and just tracing an image. Some people are so silly and ridiculous lol
I’m glad I found this post, even tho it’s an older one. It’ll be invaluable when I get mine! I may or may not have ordered me an early bday present…..maybe
