How to Make Shark Fin Cookie Decorations

I know Shark Week is over, but it’s never too late to make a few shark fin cookie decorations. I can’t wait to add them to a few beach cookies and as a matter of fact, I’ve got another plan for them and I can’t wait to share it with you. So stay tuned because I’ll share it as soon as I get it finished.

Let’s Make a few Shark Fin Decorations:

  • Begin by printing your shark fin patterns and taping them to a flat surface. This will allow the royal icing to dry flat so it’ll be easy to use your fins later. I prefer to use a piece of foam board I cut a little larger than a piece of paper as a base because it’s light, easy to move, and you can store them easily. 
  • Tape the pattern on the foam board and then tape a piece of wax paper on top of it. 
  • Next, mix your gray royal icing and place it in a piping bag.
  • Outline the fins and allow the royal icing to dry for about ten minutes before you begin flooding.
Pipe the online and get ready to flood:

  • Flood the fins with royal icing. 
  • If you’ll notice there are two different patterns for the fins. One is facing the right and the other to the left so you can decide which one you want to use or you can keep life interesting and use both. You decide. 
  • There are lines piped on the inside of the fin outline so it’ll make the fins look nice and full. I didn’t want flat shark fins and the lines really helped make them look fuller.
  • Also, I didn’t pipe the jagged lines because I have a plan for these fins that you’ll see soon. The project I’m working on will be easier without the jagged lines and I can’t wait to show you.
Flood the fins:

  • After you outline the fins and make the icing support lines, flood the fins with the gray royal icing.
  • Use a turkey lacer to smooth them out and pop any air bubbles. 
Drying and storing your fins:

  • Place the foam board with the fins in front of a fan and let them dry completely. I usually let them dry for about twenty-four hours before I remove them from the wax paper.
  • Store them in an airtight container away from the sun.
