How to Make Simple Christmas Wreath Cookies
I usually begin my holiday decorating by dragging the twelve-foot Christmas tree downstairs and spending the day fluffing the branches until it looks like a live tree. I’m not sure why I pick the hardest project to kick off the holiday season, but that’s the way I like to do things. Why can’t I take a lesson from myself? When I start making Christmas Cookies I usually begin with something simple like these wreath cookies. I only use one color of icing, a few decorations and call it a day. So why and I so difficult and so hard-headed when it comes to the way I decorate the house?
I think these Christmas Wreath Cookies have convinced me to change the way I approach how to decorate for the holidays. I’m going to pick a simple project like hanging a Christmas wreath on the front door so I can feel a sense of accomplishment that will carry me through the rest of the seasons decorating. This year, I’m won’t start with the twelve-foot tree. I’m going to slow down and take a lesson from my cookie decorating. Let’s start with something simple!
Supplies for Simple Christmas Wreath Cookies:

Scalloped Circle Cookie Cutters – These cutters are two-sided and have a regular circle and a scalloped side. The size of the cookies are 2 1⁄2″ with a 1 1⁄4″ circle cut out of the center.
Royal Icing Colors:
Green – Use any green you want. This is AmeriColor Avacado and Electric Green mixed together.

Eyes-Medium-and-Large – Red Ornaments – Remember when we made Royal Icing Candy Eyes? That’s how I made these red ornaments. Tape the template to a piece of foam board or the back of a baking sheet. Cover it with wax paper and pipe the medium dots with red royal icing. Let them dry completely and removed them. Make a lot of them because they’ll come in handy this season.
**Here’s a tip for you – Make a bunch of different colored dots to help you through the holidays. They make great ornaments for your Christmas cookies and you can also use red or pink ones for cute little cheeks on your animal cookies.
- Begin by making some sugar cookie dough. Add a little green food gel color and mix until well blended before you roll out the dough.
- Roll out the dough and cut some circles the size you want. These are 2 1⁄2″ with a 1 1⁄4″ circle cut out of the center.
- Bake according to the recipe directions.
- Let the cookies cool completely before you begin to decorate.
- Make half a batch of royal icing or make a whole batch of royal icing and add a little Americolor Avacado and Electric Green Soft Gel Food Paste until you get a color of green you like.
- Outline each wreath cookie with the green royal icing and let it dry for about 10 minutes.
- Flood the cookies with the same 15-second royal icing.
- Use the turkey lacer to smooth out the royal icing.
- While the royal icing is still wet, add the red ornaments.
- If you need the template for the red ornaments, you can find it in the tutorial for the Eyes-Medium-and-Large. Use the medium for the wreath ornaments.
- Next, add the Shimmer Stars while the icing is wet.
- The Shimmer Stars are small so it’s easier if you use food tweezer or tongs.
- Let the royal icing dry completely before you stack or package them.
