How to Make Cute Little Textured Bat Cookies

Happy Halloween! I hope you and your family have a wonderful day looking at the gorgeous fall colors. This is my favorite time of year because no matter where you look nature is showing us how powerful and beautiful she is. I’m working on some fall leaves for an upcoming tutorial and my heart is very happy because the colors give me energy! It makes me feel like a dizzy little bat! Seriously, is there a better way to say “Hello Fall and Happy Halloween” then to make some textured bat cookies? I don’t think so!

Before I dive into the fall leaves I wanted to fly by and share some textured bat cookies with you. I’m totally blown away by the different things cookie decorators are doing with textured royal icing. It’s like a new work and its making me batty in a good way!

Recipes
Cookie Cutter
Royal Icing Colors:
  • Mushroom Gray Food-Gel Color- The Cookie Countess– You will need a thick consistency and a flood consistency to make your fuzzy little bats.
  • Positively Purple Food-Gel Color- The Cookie Countess– I made the purple with SOOTM (Straight Out Of The Mixer) consistency royal icing. I wanted it thick and was a little too lazy to mix outline and flood so SOOTM worked well.
  • Black- Outline Consistency
  • White- You only need a drop and outline or flood will work. I personally used flood for the dots in the eyes.

Royal Transfer Eyes:

  • You can pipe the eys directly on the bat, but I’m a royal icing kind of girl. I like making them ahead of time and dropping them in place when I’m ready to create something. Here is a link to the FREE Candy Eye Royal Icing Transfers with a FREE video on The Cookie Network. You will need to sign in the first time you visit and check back often. I’ll be adding all kinds of FREE transfers in the future. You will also be able to see the classes I’m offering in case you’re interested.

  • Bake your sugar cookies and let them cool completely.
  • Draw a pattern on the cookie with a food-safe edible marker.
  • Pipe some purple royal icing on one wing. You can add black if you’d like or use all purple. Do whatever makes you happy.
  • Next, wrinkle a piece of parchment paper and place it on the wet icing.
  • Repeat for the other wing and each ear.
  • Let it dry completely before you remove it.
Time to Airbrush Our Little Textured Bat Cookies:

It’s time to airbrush the purple royal icing on your cute little bats.
  • I used Ohh La Lavender Edible Airbrush Color from The Cookie Countess and I like that mixed with the Positively Purple food-gel color from The Cookie Countess to airbrush around the wings and ears. You can airbrush that little area inside the wings where you’re going to add a line of the gray royal icing. It makes a cool little shadow. I also added a line in the center of the ears, but feel free to do whatever floats your boat. After all, it’s your little bat.
  • Time to outline and flood this cutie with the gray royal icing. You will need two consistencies if you plan on adding texture to make a fuzzy bat. I think textured bat cookies look cool so I was willing to mix two consistencies to make him look fuzzy. You will need a thick and flood consistency.
  • Outline and flood the bat with the gray royal icing. Let it dry completely.
  • Next, add the thick royal icing on the dry gray icing and use a paintbrush to lightly tap up and down. This will give you that fuzzy look you want for your textured bat cookies. Do this all over the body, ears, and on the top of the wings.
  • Airbrush the bat. You can watch the video to see how easy it is to add a little color to the edges of your bats.

  • While it’s wet add two drops of gray royal icing and add the eyes. Or if you don’t have royal icing transfer eyes you can pipe them right on the bat. But if you do that you may need to clear a little spot of the fur icing off of the bat so the eyes will look round instead of bumpy. The fur you added will be a little challenging to make the eyes have nice clean edges. All you need is a clean paintbrush to carefully remove the icing. Just go slow and make a circle.
  • Now add the nose and smile with the black icing.
  • You’re all done! Do you feel like a dizzy bat? I know I do!

I’m going to go for a drive through the mountains now. It’s raining but I can still enjoy the colors. Do something fun and safe today and don’t forget to eat a cookie! It’s Halloween after all!!!!

Bear hugs,
