Royal Icing Watermelons & Templates
About a year ago I made some royal icing watermelons to use as cupcake toppers. They turned out really cute and I couldn’t wait to make the templates to share with you. I don’t have pictures of my old cupcakes, but I do have several watermelon templates to share with you.
Is there anything more perfect than a nice cold watermelon on a hot summer day? It is my favorite summer snack so it made perfect sense to make watermelon royal icing transfers. If I decided to throw a watermelon party, I will take lots of pictures to share with you. It will be fun and we can pretend you are here with us.
Supplies for Royal Icing Watermelons & Templates:
(may contain affiliate links)
- Large Oval Watermelon
- Round Watermelon- Large
- Large Watermelon Halves
- Watermelon Slices- Large
- Small Watermelon Halves
- Watermelon Slices- Small
- Wax Paper
- Tape
- Green Outline Icing (I mixed AmeriColor Electric Green and touch of Forrest Green.)
- Red Outline Icing
- Detail Paintbrush
- AmeriColor Black Gel
- Airbrush Gun (Optional)
I know there are several templates of the royal icing watermelons, but there are so many cute designs that I couldn’t decide on just one so six seemed appropriate. If you want a different template you can Google and find an image you like.
When I made these before, I used 2 different colors of icing, but this time, I wanted to simplify it. Airbrushing the lines is an easy way and I really liked the way they turned out. If you don’t have an airbrush gun, you can use two different colors of green and mix them with a toothpick.
Oval and Round Royal Icing Watermelons:
- Begin by printing and preparing your templates like this.
- Next, with the brown icing, pipe the stem with a #2 tip.
- Then, outline and flood with the green icing and let it dry for about twenty minutes.
- Once they’re dry, airbrush the lines with AmeriColor Green. Then, airbrush the edges, and if you need airbrushing tips click here.
- If you want to add a little detail to the stem you can paint a few lines with a fine paintbrush and a little brown food color gel.
Supplies for Royal Icing Watermelons:
- For the slices, begin by outlining and flooding the slice with red and let it dry for about twenty minutes.
- Airbrush the bottom and right edge of the slice with AmeriColor Holiday Red.
- Pipe a line of white at the bottom and let it dry.
- Pipe a thick line of green to the bottom.
- Once the watermelons are dry, paint on the seeds with AmeriColor Black with a detail brush. You can use the wooden end of the paintbrush to make three dots. Then, use the paintbrush to make it a teardrop shape.
I am looking forward to using these royal icing watermelon transfers on cute cookies. I have been looking for some party ideas and found Simple Watermelon Slice Cookies by Sweet Sugarbelle, and Watermelon Krispie Treats by Glorious Treats. They each have a great tutorial and I can’t wait to make them. I also linked these to Whipperberry’s Friday Flair Link Party and you can see the party here.

Bear hugs,
I’ve made a few watermelon decorated sugar cookies. They are one of the happiest summer cookies. I’ve never thought to make royal icing templates to use on cupcakes. You are so smart and so sweet to make and share all these templates.
You are so right Paula! Watermelons scream SUMMER! I could eat some everyday. I am glad you enjoy the templates. I am having fun making them.
You make all these things look so absolutely perfect! Love your watermelons.

Thanks Radhika! You are sweet.
Seeing these little RI transfers makes me want to start making cupcakes…which I do not typically do! Coincidentally, I have been making watermelon “seeds” with leftover black icing for a couple of days now. I am just looking for an excuse to whip up some watermelon cookies…I will be “seed” ready when I finally do!
As always, thanks for sharing your templates and tutorial!
Watermelon seeds from leftover icing is a great idea! I can’t wait to see your watermelons.
PS.- If you don’t want to make cupcakes, you can buy them from your grocery store bakery with icing only and add the transfers before you serve them. I have done that in a pinch and it worked great;)
Very cute idea. LOVE it!!! Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome Ashley!!
Oooh, I love the watermelon slices even more than the watermelons. What a terrific combo!! I’ll have to add these to my ever-growing list of cookies I want to do(including the RI transfers!) I tried to post my starfish, on your page, which in retrospect was probably a faux paux, so I’ll just tell you, they turned out sooo good!! And my family absolutely loved them…especially my eldest grand-daughter who also loved the “crunchy” eyeballs on my owls that you taught us how to make. Well, she loves the “crunchy” starfish as much! Hugs!!
Thanks so much Sharon. I am glad you made the starfish and owls. If you email me the pictures, I will load them on my Facebook page. It doesn’t play well with others sometimes but, I would love to share your pictures. Email them to lisa@thebearfootbaker.com.
PS- You made my day telling me you made the starfish and owls!!!
So cute and perfect for summer! Really great feature! 🙂
Awe, thanks Nessa:)
Hi Lisa,
Loved these watermelons!!!! you said you made them for some cupcakes… I have a question: is it normal for the royal icing transfer to “melt” once it rests on the buttercream frosting? The times I used them to decorate my cupcakes that’s exactly what happened, and they were dried for days!!!
Thanks, Lisa!
I add the RI Transfers to my cupcakes right before the event. I add them at the last minute and don’t have to worry about the icing making them bleed.
What kind of icing did you use?
I don’t know which one I like more, the melons or the slices! SO cute, Lisa 🙂
The good things about RI Transfers, you don’t have to chose! LOL Make the both! Heheheh
TOTALLY cute; thank you. And your enthusiasm kinda cracks me up, too. 😀 Thank you for making me smle.

Hahahahah! I am kinda like Mighty Mouse on speed sometimes! It is hard to keep up but, I am so glad I am cracking you up!
Also, I want to visit Alaska soon. Hubby doesn’t want to take me there because he is afraid I will never come home! 😉
And we are having absolutely LOVELY weather this summer. If you don’t go the “tour” route and you decide you want information (brochures, recommendations, newspapers) let me know. I’ll send it along to you! Even if it’s years from now.
Stephane
You are so sweet!! I want to visit even more now!
These are real nice. My red never comes out as nice as the red on these slices
Sweet Sugar Belle did a post on Tulip Red and you can see it here: http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2011/07/tulip-red/
Lisa:
I really, really love these. I have recently gone back to using transfers again………but I have never thought to detail with airbrushing…you are a genious!
I like the airbrush because it adds a lot of detail and I don’t have to worry about the colors bleeding. I wish I was a genius because then, I might be able to set the clock on my DVD player! Hehehe
Another great RI transfer set, Lisa! And you’re right, watermelon is the perfect summer snack. Now, can you tell me the right way to pick a sweet and ripe melon from the grocery store? I have the worse luck with that. 🙂
Thanks Mike! I pick a ripe watermelon by looking for a yellow bottom. If the melon has stayed on the vine until it is ripe, the bottom becomes yellow and you will have yourself the best summer snack EVER!
Could your post come at a more perfect time? I’m having my daughter’s first birthday next weekend and the theme is…watermelons! I may have to whip up some of these as cupcake toppers. I’m already planning to make Sugar Belle’s watermelon slice cookies. Thanks for the six templates! You’ve outdone yourself!
Awe! Sounds like you are going to have an awesome weekend! Hug that precious baby girl for me.
I am so glad you can use the templates. Just a reminder, place the royal icing watermelons on the cupcakes just before the party so the green and red won’t bleed onto the cupcakes.
Super Cute Lisa!
So cute and perfect!
Too precious! These are amazingly adorable! : )
