Icing Pansies – Tutorial with Video
Do you like pansies? I think they are cute little flowers. I like how the center is a bolder and darker color than the rest of the flower. The only thing that drives me crazy about them is they come in so many colors that I can’t decide which ones to plant each year. The good thing about making icing pansies is that I can make them in any color I want and I don’t have to limit myself to just a few colors.
I can mix it up and live life on the edge with any color combination I can imagine. I only used two different colors to make this tutorial for you but, I am sure if you stick around a while, you will see some other color combinations that you will like.
Supplies for Icing Pansies:
Thick yellow icing in a piping bag fitted with a #104 decorating tip.
Thick purple icing in a piping bag fitted with a #104 decorating tip.
Flower Nail Template
Parchment Paper Squares
Double-Sided Sticky Tape
Detail Paint Brush
Violet Food Gel Color

I thought I would show you how perfect icing pansies look on top of cupcakes. They are the perfect size and if your guests don’t like to eat royal icing, they can just take them off and give them to someone who does. Like me!
Some of you have had some questions about how to place royal icing transfers on cupcakes and cakes. I thought this would be a perfect time to tell you how I add them with success.
- Try not to add the royal icing transfers until the last minute. I have placed them on cupcakes and then I have had some leftover and they stayed good for a few days but, since it is royal icing and it behaves badly in different climates, you need to work on the side of caution. Don’t add them until you have to add them.
- Make sure the flowers are completely dry. Let them dry for several days! If they are damp or wet at all, they will not last on your cupcake and cake icing.
- If I put them in an airtight container after placing them on the cupcakes, the moisture from the cupcakes could make them melt.

Other videos I have watched use alchahol to mix with the food coloring is there that much of a difference?
You can use water, alchahol or lemon juice. I prefer water because it doesn’t add an extra flavor to the cookies and everyone has easy access to water.
