Royal Icing Flower Decoration with Template
Welcome to “Template Tuesday” where all you have to do is “Print and Pipe!” Today we are going to talk about Royal Icing Flower Decorations. I want to start something new. It is going to be “Template Tuesday’s” and all you have to do is “Print and Pipe” the template that I make for you. You can use them for royal icing transfers, sprinkles (if you shrink the pattern), cupcake toppers, cookie accents and more. I keep jars of them on hand for cupcakes and to help speed up my cookie making time.
If you have ideas of things you want, leave me a comment and I will try to make it for you. I have a lot of fun templates ready for you. Let’s kick off the First-Ever Template Tuesday with some cute airbrushed flowers.
You can make these with or without airbrushing them but, I thought it would be fun to give them a little spritz of sky blue. I like the way they turned out.
If you are new to royal icing transfers click here for a tutorial. Click here for my royal icing recipe.
For the center of the flower, I used the eye template I made a few weeks ago. If you don’t want to make the white centers, you can add sugar pearls, dragees, or candy beads. If you live in a humid climate, you can make and store the centers and the flower separately and use a dot of icing as glue to connect them the night before you use them. This method works great for me.
The best part about transfers is, you can make them and store them in an airtight container so they are ready when you need them. I store mine in 4 oz Ball Quilted Jelly Jars and 8 oz Half Pint Jars. Some people store them in a flat container with wax paper in between each layer but, the jars work well for me.
If you ever have leftover icing, don’t throw it away. These were made with some blue I used for these elephants and it worked perfectly. Just “pipe” the blue flower on the wax paper and then dropped the white center in the middle. Let them dry for at least 24 hours before removing them.
If you chose to airbrush them, do so before you remove them from the wax paper. If you remove them first, you will be chasing them all around the countertops. They are light and will fly away when the air hits them. Yes, I found this out the hard way! LOL

Click here to download this pattern and feel free to re-size it if you want. I am going to make tiny rainbow colors and use them as sprinkles.
I hope you are looking forward to “Template Tuesdays” as much as I am! Leave me a comment of what template you want. I will try my best to make it happen!

Thank you so much for this – it really helps out the beginner in so many ways. It’s one less thing I have to fret about, finding the perfect template. I just tried the camellia brushed-embroidery flowers, going to use them as cupcake toppers. I was pretty impressed with myself 🙂
Have you ever done ladybugs? A friend loves ladybugs, and I’m trying to come up with a few other things for her baby shower.
I am glad you like templates. It is nice when you can print them instead of trying to make them as you need them. I actually have ladybugs on my template to do list. I will try to make them for you soon. Happy Creating 🙂
Templates are so helpful! Thanks for sharing Lisa and RI flower transfers are great! I just made daisies on my blog to use as toppers for mini cupcakes. I bet these would look equally cute on a mini-cuppy!
I am a little behind reading my favorite blogs because I went to the SNAP Conference in Utah last week. I am glad you told me about your daisies! I am on my way now to check them out 🙂
No worries lady! I know how life can pull us away from our cookie-reading 😉 Hope you had a fabulous time at the conference!!
The templates are such a good idea. Thanks for sharing! I’m always looking for new things to try.
Thanks Megan! Templates are so fun and easy!
I’m so looking forward to future Template Tuesdays! Maybe some tools like a hammer or handsaw for Fathers Day?
Awesome Mike! I will work on that! Thanks for the idea:)
Hello! I just found this blog and I am in love! I love baking blogs. 🙂 I am taking a decorating class and we just recently had to bring in royal icing for flowers and mine is not working at all!!! It is almost melting together…? I have no clue what to do and this is my first time making royal icing so… Do you have any feedback? Do I need to add something to it? Thanks so much!! 🙂
Hi Molly, I am so glad you found me! I love helping fellow decorators. If your icing is running together, it is too thin. Here are a couple of videos I made that might help you.
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any other questions. Happy Creating!
Yay for Template Tuesday! What a fun idea 🙂
Glad you like the idea Jennifer! I am always looking for templates so I thought I would make some for us. Maybe I can make a zombie for your hubby! Hahahaha
Thanks for the template! I love royal icing transfers. Check out Klickitat Street for great jack-o-lantern faces template and Montreal Confections for a cute teddy bear template (for adding to onsies).
I wasn’t able to find the shamrock template. I think my eyesight is failing, or I’m just in denial about aging.
If you need suggestions for future templates, how about a puppy pawprint? I’m thinking they may be too hard because the pads usually aren’t connected. I know if someone can do it, you can. Thanks for the great templates!
You know, I might need to add the shamrock template! I KNOW I am getting old! LOL I will think about the paw print and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the suggestion!
I have added the shamrock template. If you look under the supply list and click on “Shamrock Transfers” it will take you to the pattern. Here is the link:http://thebearfootbaker.com/2012/03/shamrock-royal-icing-transfers/
See, I told you I was the one getting old! Hahahah
Thank you so much for sharing these ideas. I am famous for putting my extra Royal Icing in a container and then not getting back to it. Never again….:)
Maybe an abundance of templates will help you use that icing. I also have a half batch of royal icing recipe if you want to make a smaller batch. Here is the link: http://thebearfootbaker.com/2013/03/half-a-batch-of-royal-icing-recipe/
I’m so excited about Template Tuesdays! I’m new to cookie decorating, and these royal icing decorations are brilliant! I made my first set for some Spider Man cookies that I’m making for my nephew’s birthday. Eagerly awaiting next Tuesday’s template!
Since you are new Adia, is there any template you would like me to make?
I’m making a set of little bird cookies for my cousin’s daughter’s first birthday. I wanted to include some cookies for her older sister as well (so that she doesn’t feel left out!). I was planning to make some ballet themed cookies, so ballet slippers or a tutu template would be wonderful.
RI transfers have helped me many times since I’m no artist, but I sure can trace, lol. How about a bow template? Not like “hello Kitty” just a cute bow with tales.
I will make you a bow template! Thanks for letting me know what you want 🙂
I am also new to this cookie adventure, and I am constantly amazed at how generous you, and many others are with your knowledge and talent. Thank you so much for sharing, and I look forward to using these templates, and many other tips I have found on your fabulous blog! Hugs!
Awe! You are so sweet Traci! (((Bear Hugs))) to you!!!!
I love that you “established cookiers” are so very generous with your talent and knowledge. Thank you!
Oh my goodness, I didn’t see Traci’s comment above mine till I posted. LOL. Hope that proves to you that we beginners are truly grateful.
were you reading my mind???? Someone asked me to make some daisy cookies and I wanted to embellish them with some RI transfers. Transfer Tuesdays???? You had me at, well, that heading!!! Thank you!!! Now for some circles all in one spot so I can pipe macarons consistently. You are awesome!
Circles are easy! What size do you want them?
BTW, I couldn’t find daisy transfers that were different. These are perfect. thanks again.
