How to Make Fuzzy Little Bat Cookies
This summer seems to be one of the hottest summers I can remember or maybe it’s just me and my love of fall, but I’m ready for things to cool off a bit. I was thinking if I start making fuzzy little bat cookies and cute pumpkin cookies it might make me cool off and feel like autumn is already here. Well, it’s not working because the humidity is off the chart, but at least I can play with a few bats and some fun colored royal icing.

- Bat Cookie Cutter from Sweet Design Shoppe– regular-sized bat cutter which is 2-3/8″ tall x 4-1/2″ wide.
Royal Icing Colors:
- Purple- I mixed a little AmeriColor Violet with some of The Cookie Countess Positively Purple Gel
Tipless piping bags- I like using tipless piping bags because they are easy to use and you don’t have to wash piping tips when you’re done decorating. I use the tipless bags from
If you prefer Ateco Disposable Decorating Bags with couplers and decorating tips or if you prefer decorating bottles go for it! Use whatever you’re comfortable using and have fun decorating.
Candy Eyes Free Templates:

Fan- If you use a fan to dry your cookies it will help your royal icing dry with a shine.
- Begin by making your candy eyes or you can purchase different sizes from places like Wilton or Wal-Mart. I prefer to make my own because I can make different sizes to use for all types of cookie designs. Once your candy eyes dry you can store them in an airtight container away from the sun and they’ll last for months! I’m making different sizes this week so I’ll be ready for Halloween and Christmas cookies.
- Make your cookie dough, cut out your cute bat cookie shapes and bake them according to the cookie recipe directions.
- Let the bat cookies cool completely before you begin decorating.
- It’s time to decorate part of the wings and ears with the purple icing so outline and flood the bottom part of the wings and a small amount inside the ears and let it dry. I let the icing dry overnight so the black icing wouldn’t bleed into the pretty purple color because of the high humidity.
- Outline the bat’s body, ears, and wings with a zig-zag line so you’ll have a fuzzy bat cookie when you’re finished decorating.
- Flood the outer part of the ears with the black royal icing and pop the air bubbles.
- Outline the top of the wings.
- While the royal icing on the wings is wet add the bat’s finger on each wing. I just found out on Google that the dark spots on the bat’s wings are called fingers. I’m pretty sure my grandson Tripp already knew this because he’s an amazing animal expert!
- Once you’ve added the fingers use a turkey lacer or scribe tool to smooth it out and pop all the air bubbles.
- Outline and flood the fuzzy bat cookies body. Pop all the air bubbles and push the icing into the fuzzy parts of the fur so your bat will be super cute.
- While the icing on the body is wet add the candy eyes.
- Add the purple cheeks.
- You probably can’t see the smile in the picture because I piped it with the black royal icing but pipe a black line from cheek to cheek. You can see it in person, but not in this photo.
- Next, add two white pointy teeth.
- Let the royal icing dry so you can enjoy your fuzzy bat cookies! Oh yeah, remember when I said you can make any size candy eyes you want to make? This bat is a good reason I like to make my own because these eyes make him look kinda funny!
